[discussion] [help] 7 y/o 80lb lab mix with immune-mediated meningitis and now a torn cruciateDog Talks

Welp. This year just keeps coming with the punches. I guess this ended up being a long post so thanks to those who read through it. Our boy Hugo got diagnosed with immune-mediated meningitis back in August and we've been working with a neurologist on his treatment plan. Managing this and coming to terms with the fact that our pup would be on limited activity for at least 4+ months took some time however we were just getting to a good place with it and almost to the next phase of reducing the predinose he is on. We had to extend the first phase of predinose dosage due to him still showing pain symptoms but this last week and half was very promising and we were looking towards reducing his dosage down to 10mg later next week. Well, on Tues the Hubs heard a yelp and then Hugo wouldn't put any pressure on his back leg. Having had a boxer in the past who tore her CCL and subsequently her other one, we knew the signs almost immediately. Our primary vet and their orthopedic surgeon...

[Help] My Rat Terrier Mix gets sick and vomits weekly.Dog Talks

My dog Katana is a Rat Terrier Mix, but she has ultra severe separation anxiety. We have been trying to find ways to get her to calm down and stop puking. Both parents have 8/5 jobs and I have HS and my sister has MS. So she has to be in the crate for awhile because if we leave her loose, she tears everything up. Heres the problem though, she sometimes gets sick EVEN IF we are home. Like even if we have been giving her attention all day, she still gets sick and pukes all over our floor. My parents want to get arid of her because she is ruining our carpets because if she dosent eat grass, she pukes pure bile. I have grown super attached to her and cant fathom letting her go. I also had to question whether she was truly happy with us, which when she wasnt sick, I used to be absolutely sure she loved us and was happy here, but now I'm beginning to question it and it breaks my heart Well, do you guys know what's wrong with her (I have feeling its something beyond just separat...

[Help] My belgian malinois keeps on scratching.Dog Talks

Recently, my 2 yr old Belgian Malinois keeps on scratching it started last week and we have no idea what it causes. He doesn't have any fleas and he bathes regularly. I also ordered an organic dog shampoo and soap for him and test it out if it helps. This is the first time it happened. Any tips or advice? [Help] My rescue dog is having nightly panic attacks and nothing we’ve tried is helping!Dog Talks

My dog Millie is around 9 years old and I rescued her in April. She was a puppy mill breeder and has some anxiety. We think she is a Shihpoo and she is 10 pounds. Every night before I go to sleep without fail she will start shaking/trembling, panting and pacing around the apartment. It usually lasts for an hour before she tires herself out. We’ve tried trazadone, gabapentin, a calming diffuser, calming treats, a stuffed animal with a beating heart, a thunder shirt and nothing has stopped this from happening. It’s so hard to watch her be so anxious every single night and I just wish there was something I can do. My vet seems hesitant to try Prozac. Anyone go through anything similar or have any advice? [Help] Pomeranian may be having seizuresDog Talks

Yesterday afternoon, my 6 year old Pom got up from his bed and looked like he was struggling to walk. His eyes seemed glossed over and he was uncoordinated and swaying. He didn't want to walk off his bed and he looked kind of confused I guess. This only lasted for a minute and a half, then he went back to his normal self. It wasn't because of injury, because he was back to running around as normal immediately after, his appetite and poops are fine too. Today, he had a similar moment but only lasting about 30 seconds. I gave him a treat to try to get him to walk and he took it but was drooling a bit, which he never normally does. I have an appointment with the vet to get him checked tomorrow, but I was hoping someone could give any suggestions as to what it could be. The fact he immediately goes back to normal afterwards makes me wonder if it's something neurological, but I have absolutely no idea what it could be. Has anyone seen something similar in their dogs? Any he...

[Discussion] Why is it unethical to breed/buy cockapoo/cavapoo?Dog Talks

I did some research on these two breeds. I was looking into a King Charles but I was a bit put off by all of the prone health concerns even tho the dog matched most of my needs. I did some research into cavapoos and cockapoos and the main health concern has to do with their eyes, but I didn't find other genetic predispositions. I tried looking on this sub for more about these breeds but everyone seems to say that no reputable breeder would make these and they are just sold by puppy mills? Is there a reason for this? If anything the King Charles Cavalier seems like a much less healthy breed from the admittedly little research I've done compared to these 2. [discussion] Golden vs Labrador retrievers?Dog Talks

Everything I have read had said these two breeds are super similar, labs being, on average, just slightly bigger, and goldens tending to be a little more “chill” as long as they get adequate exercise, while labs have NO chill. Would you say this is an accurate? What is your experience with these two breeds? We have decided to put in applications at breed specific rescues so that temperament is evaluated and there is a good support system in case of serious issues. There is a golden rescue and a lab rescue in my area, trying to decide which one to put in an application with(maybe we should do both and then wait and see who we fall in love with first?) thoughts? [RIP] Molly, Bullmastiff, Almost 4 yoDog Talks

Our Molly was diagnosed with Gastric Lymphoma at the beginning of June this year. We did everything that we could and half way through the CHOP protocol the VCA thinks the cancer jumped to her nervous system. To make a sad story short we had to put our wonderful dog Molly down this morning. She lost her ability to walk and wasn’t drinking. Poor thing suffered enough. She has now crossed the rainbow bridge and I told her before she left to say hello to my English Bulldog, Dudley. Rest In Peace my sweet baby girl, Molly. [Discussion] Is it possible to sue if the shelter lied about health of the adopted animal?Dog Talks

I was wondering if its possible to sue the animal shelter in small claims court if they misled me on the health of the dog I adopted? They said he was healthy but when I went to the vet to get him checked up and it turns out the dog has a grade 3 heart murmur, poor dental health, a cracked tooth, and tracheomalacia. The dog was found to have tracheomalacia after he had a bad reaction(stopped breathing in his sleep) to trazadone prescribed to him by a vet before his visit to get a heartworm test. I ended up spending several hundred dollars (>$700) overall to get him an emergency visit as well as visiting two different vets to check on the heart murmur. I have recorded messages from the guy at the shelter who handled the adoption and he said they would reimburse me as well, but has so far gone silent and is now ghosting me on Facebook and by text. It also seems he has done this with foster parents before as well. What are my legal options to get reimbursed? Submitted October 16...

[Discussion] No kill animal shelters have become counter productive to their true cause.Dog Talks

Ok, hear me out here. First off I'm just a hard working single dad looking to replace the family pet I just had to put down. I've grown up & volunteered with dogs. To be clear, I am not soliciting the sale of puppies here. So, most no kill shelters team up with rescue organizations & go into places like native reserves to rescue dogs, while performing basic medical treatments, including snipping them. This is to prevent unethical breeding & living conditions e.g. puppy mills. This in turn reduces the number of dogs available. The no kill thing is just a pleasant side effect. It's easier to adopt all the dogs from a shelter if they only have 2 or 3. This may vary region to region, but I can remember the shelters being full in the 90's & 2000's. Now they've only got a couple (I've been looking for over a month, & check regularly) that dont do well with kids or cats or dogs. So I was pretty shocked to recently see mix breed mutts going for ...

[RIP] Mollie, Golden Retriever, 12Dog Talks

Mollie’s been my best friend since I was 5. I can’t believe she’s really gone. I knew it was inevitable in the next few years but I thought we’d get more time with her. I moved across the country three months ago so I didn’t even get to say a final goodbye or witness her burial. We’re not 100% sure on the exact reason for her death. A couple weeks ago she was put on a steroid for her skin allergies that were resistant to treatment from creams and antibiotics. The first week or so she was doing wonderful. The steroids seemed to help her arthritis as well. The only side effect was that she was pretty thirsty. About 2 weeks in she would refuse to eat some mornings, which was something she never ever did. She loved food. Monday my dad called the vet and they were like “That’s not usually a symptom...call us back on Friday”. Tuesday she was low energy and lethargic. She wasn’t hungry for kibble but had some sausage. By the evening she was extremely lethargic. Unfortunately my dad lives in...

[HELP] My Dog Waits for Her Dead Owner to Come HomeDog Talks

Hello, I haven't been on reddit for a while, so I apologize in advanced if this has already been discussed before. Me and my mom had our toy poodle since I was in the seventh grade, but she's a lot more attached to my mother than she is with me (understandably so). I'm in my twenties now, and my mother has passed last September; however, every night when it's time for bed, my dog would always want to sit in the living room. This is what she does when she waits for my mom when she'd be late coming home from work. She doesn't really know that her owner is gone. Her behavior is still normal. She hasn't shown any symptoms of depression yet, and she still is as playful and active as ever. I'm worried that once she realizes that my mom isn't coming back, what will become of her, y'know? For right now, I'm trying to spend a lot of time with my dog i.e taking her to the park, keeping her active overall, and lots and l o t s of cuddles. I'm a...

[Fluff] My shelter gifted me a crate! It was very sweet.Dog Talks

I went in to walk a few dogs today. I’d moved recently, and one of the workers asked me about it. I told her it was fine, but sadly my crate didn’t make the trip. It fell apart during the move, but I said it wasn’t a big deal because my dog doesn’t stay in his crate much anymore. She responded and said, but crates are so useful, even if your dog is fine in the house. I said she had a point, but dropped it because I don’t like complaining, but what she said is super true. My dog might not use his crate daily, but it is really nice to have around. If he’s getting a raw bone or kong, I use his crate. If I’m going to have guests that walk through my apartment, I use his crate. When I’m cooking and there’s food out everywhere, I use his crate. If he just took a bath and is wet, I use his crate. When I’m annoyed by him and don’t want to deal with dog, I use his crate. It’s super handy to have around for a lot of reasons, but I didn’t want to spend money on another one for him because they’...

[Fluff] I adopted a dog that is perfect... for me.Dog Talks

I adopted a dog that is perfect... for me. I picked her up after medically separating from the military for PTSD. She was found in a dumpster, after having just given birth to two puppies, also in the dumpster with her. She never got attached to her puppies, probably because she was thrown into the trash after having them. Those puppies were adopted very quickly. But Foxie has issues trusting people, and although she's never bitten, she does show her teeth. She's definitely all bark and no bite. Just like me. I've been with her for four years now, and she is the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. I thought she was going to help me with my anxiety, but I've learned that we are helping each other. Our traumas are different, but our anxieties are very similar. We're both kind of hermits, and more like cats, than a human or a dog. We're both very aloof, and only want attention when we want it. My family actually calls her a "catdog," shout o...

[Discussion] I got called a "Karen" at the dog park today.Dog Talks

\ Please not I am not using breeds as an indicator that the breed is a problem but as a way to easily keep the dogs straight in the story* The dog park in my town is not stellar so I drive 25 minutes up the highway to the another area dog park. It is an amazing park. The owners are largely responsible, there are always dogs there, and it is huge with lots of fun features for the dogs. Today while I was there a super adorable samoyed arrived. I looked around for the owner so I could tell them their cloud of a pup was adorable could couldn't find them and didn't think much of it. Being an obsessor of adorable dogs (especially fluffy white ones as that is what I have) I wanted my dog to be friends with him so I told my dog to approach him! Think of the adorable photos! Wellllllll turns out the samoyed was reactive so we flipped around and I told my dog to leave him. I started walking laps around the park and noticed that the samoyed kept getting in fights with some dogs and hu...

[DISCUSSION]I have a pitpull and i intend to get a doberman pinscherDog Talks

Ok, so i own a blue nose pitbull (3 years old)and her name is Karma. She is the most affectionate dog i have ever seen and she in incredibly nice to both people and other dogs. Most of the people who know her haven't met any dog like her(she is very expressive of her unique character). She literally doesn't know how to be agressive, like if some dog tries to attack her or me she will try to hide behind me. I aslo want to add that Karma was raised and socalised with a cat(He died 2 years ago). I have always wanted a doberman and i want to know if getting one will get me in troube, i know Karma isn't going to cause problems but im worried about this kind dog combination and the fact that dogs are kind of like people- individually hardwired. [Discussion] If your watching someone’s dog, follow. The. Instructions.Dog Talks

I am beyond frustrated right now. This summer, I had my dog stay at my in laws because my husband and I were in the middle of a move, and we couldn’t have a dog at our temporary place. Prior to leaving the dog at the in laws, we had him on a strict feeding schedule twice a day. I told my in laws that he needs to stick to his schedule, or he will over eat. If he free feeds, he will eat way to much. We also told them to keep the treats to a minimum. Fast forward to the end summer, we go to pick up our dog, and he is overweight. Come to find out, they free fed him, despite my instructions, gave him a lot of table scraps and peanut butter everyday. Im grateful and all that they watched him, but I am frustrated, because I am now left with an extremely picky eater, and an overweight dog. He used to gladly and happily eat his meals, now all he wants is human food. I can’t get him to eat twice day. He will only eat at the end of the day when he gets hungry enough. I currently am trying the ...
