[Discussion] No kill animal shelters have become counter productive to their true cause.Dog Talks

Ok, hear me out here. First off I'm just a hard working single dad looking to replace the family pet I just had to put down. I've grown up & volunteered with dogs. To be clear, I am not soliciting the sale of puppies here. So, most no kill shelters team up with rescue organizations & go into places like native reserves to rescue dogs, while performing basic medical treatments, including snipping them. This is to prevent unethical breeding & living conditions e.g. puppy mills. This in turn reduces the number of dogs available. The no kill thing is just a pleasant side effect. It's easier to adopt all the dogs from a shelter if they only have 2 or 3. This may vary region to region, but I can remember the shelters being full in the 90's & 2000's. Now they've only got a couple (I've been looking for over a month, & check regularly) that dont do well with kids or cats or dogs. So I was pretty shocked to recently see mix breed mutts going for up to $2000, & pure breds & designer breeds going for double that. I'm just a working class guy, I cant justify spending that when I've got a house & kid. So I can't have a dog now? Due to the high prices, its brought out alot of scammers. I'm seeing crazy high prices from litters with no history or medical treatment. Im seeing horror stories of people sending money only to not get what they paid for, or nothing at all. Easy money. So we are back into the unethical breeding & conditions. So I could just rescue, right? I'm ok to spend $500 for a pup that's been vet checked atleast. But every other family is thinking the same thing, so demand is way up. Rescue organizations have to severely restrict applicants just to filter through them all. "You Can only apply from this time to this time", with a window of 1 or 2 hrs. Or my chain link fence isnt big enough. Or my yard isnt big enough. Or I'm gone for more then 6 hrs. Or I've got a young kid. Etc. Etc. The dogs are adopted within days. Its hopeless. So what other option do I have? Well, I have a native reserves 30 min from here in opposite directions. Do I go & support the very thing I opposed initially? I could wait for months to maybe get a rescue that might not be a good fit or have special needs, or I could eliminate the middle man (rescue shelter) & go straight to the source. It would still cost me $500 or so, but I get a puppy, my pick of the litter, & the parents may even be around. Its unfortunately looking like my best option at this point.
