[Help] Vets are telling me "there is nothing more we can do" to prevent my dog from constantly scratching open his woundDog Talks

I posted a while ago about a wound my dog got. The vet couldn't find a cause and were basically no help at all. They gave us some medicine and steroid powder to clean it with. A cone won't help, we can't cover it or else it gets disgusting, and the medicine they've given us isn't helping either. He scratches the healthy scab off every single night in his crate. We've tried only covering it at night, but that caused the same gross discharge and the vet told us not to cover it at all. I considered dog boots, but he would just chew them off at night. We were considering getting him the boots and having him wear a muzzle at night, as uncomfortable as it may sound. I called and asked what we should do and they pretty much just said "don't let him do that". I'm frustrated and angry that they couldn't offer us any kind of additional help. Surely there's something we can do??? Last night we came home and he scratched it to the point where he

[Help] Tips for safely walking a strong flight risk dogDog Talks

Hello r/dogs ! Looking for advice for walking our newest addition to the family. We recently adopted a very scared but very sweet adult bloodhound, Ladybird. LB comes from an abusive puppy mill situation and is still learning to trust humans. We actually already had a terrifying ordeal with LB - she escaped from my husband the second night we had her, and the rescue helped us search for her for two days before we finally caught her by luring her onto someone's porch with a dog friend of hers that a former foster brought for the search. We have since built a very tall fence to contain her. LB is doing very well and is already bonding to me, I can pretty much rub all over her without issue. She's getting there with my husband but is still afraid of his touch. I'm concerned because she is a young dog and needs lots of exercise, but our yard is small and I am afraid to take her on a walk after her Great Escape. She is also very strong, and even though I'm pretty stout my

[Discussion] Big and Small Dog ParksDog Talks

So this may seem like a very early question as I don’t plan to get another dog for 3ish years at least But my questions is mainly at people with both small and large dogs. How do you go to dog parks? Do you take your pups to an “all inclusive” dog park that’s for all sizes? Or do you take turns etc? Most of the dog parks near me are separated by weight, I have a dog under 30lb and I’m hoping to get a standard poodle which would definitely be over 30lbs. So, how do y’all manage? [Fluff] My rescue dog has improved my mental healthDog Talks

Just as the title states, my new rescue dog has done wonders for my mental health. I had a fairly rough childhood and never really got to be a kid. As a result, I've grown up to be a guarded and anxious adult, somewhat unable to express my feelings as well as I'd like to. 9 months ago, I decided to find a therapist and deal with the things I've been ignoring for most of my life. And then... My partner and I adopted a rescue dog. She's about 8 or 9 months old and the sweetest, smartest dog I've ever met. Something about being her human, watching her personality blossom, and creating such a strong bond with her has healed the part of my heart that has felt void for so long. It kind of feels like I get to give her the "childhood" that I would've wanted. Each day, we have a happiness-induced sneezing fit/dance party when we wake up, take nice leisurely walks where she gets to sniff for as long as she pleases, have zoomies with my partner and I

[Help] How do I tell which treats are my dog's favorite?Dog Talks

My dog is a vacuum on legs. He will eat anything and come back for more. We use kibble to train every day and he's still excited for it. I tried playing a game where he would "choose" from 2 different treats in my hands after sniffing them both but he would just eat whichever was closer or always the left one or randomly. There's a difference in enthusiasm between kibble and actual treats but anything other than kibble seems to be treated the same (very excited, attentive, comes back for more) I've tried boil chicken, cheese, jerky, freeze dried liver, lung, green tripe, store bought training treats, cheerios, air dried food (Ziwipeak), freeze dried raw food (Vital Essentials), Happy Howie's, sweet potato... How do I tell which treats are high value to my dog when it seems like they're all high value? Any tips? Submitted November 12, 2020 at 06:49PM by kitty_paw https://ift.tt/35taOzQ

[Discussion] Scared of neighbors' aggressive Rottweiler, need adviceDog Talks

I moved into a nice little complex that I really like in September with my fiance and my dog, an 11-year-old corgi/shiba-inu mix. My neighbor has a 9-month-old male Rottweiler. I was surprised by this immediately, as I specifically picked this apartment because it is a restricted breed complex. I truly don't have a problem with any breed, but in my experience apartments that DO allow restricted breeds are absolutely full of dogs, which I wanted to avoid. The dog barks occasionally, no big deal, so does mine. The problem is that it is extremely fence-reactive and only getting worse. The apartments have a little patio attached with a wooden fence and gate - our neighbor like to leave their dog unattended on their patio (which is so small for a large dog, I feel bad for him). At first he would just growl when we walked past, then growling and barking at us as soon as he heard our front door open, and now he jumps against their wooden gate with his paws on the gate, head sticking ove

[Fluff] I love that my dog makes an effort to show me that he appreciates new toysDog Talks

Humans are taught to show their appreciation for getting gifts by using the gift in front of the gift-giver so like for example if grandma gives you a shirt you wear the shirt next time you see her. Well my dog does this with new toys lol. We have literally dozens of toys because I dog-sit so I keep a ton of different toys on hand, yet he always makes sure to give extra attention to new toys. He plays with it exclusively for like a week straight and carries it around everywhere he goes to show it off and it’s so cute. It makes me so happy to see he knows it’s new and special. Dogs are always surprising me with how smart they are. I mean I would kinda think with how many toys we have that a new one wouldn’t be that big of a deal, but he at least makes it seem like it is. It makes me really happy so I just had to share! Dog tax Submitted November 12, 2020 at 09:58PM by 292to137 https://ift.tt/3njXuUh

My dog took advantage of my depression. [Discussion]Dog Talks

About 6 months ago, my boyfriend and I took in a dog. We drove 45 minutes away to get him. I knew nothing about his personality and temperament, and the people who were rehoming him didn’t speak English. They handed us a 50 lb bag of food, the leash, and we loaded him into my car. I only knew he was around 6 months old, and that he was a husky German Shepard mix. On the way home he was terrified, and I was too. He growled and lunged at me several times and I was already questioning what I had gotten into. When we got back to our apartment, my boyfriend and I coaxed him out of the car, and from that moment on, he was ours. We named him Poro, a reference from our favorite video game. He quickly grew to trust us, and we learned that he was a very smart dog, probably thanks to his breed. Our first time walking him was... hard. It was clear that he had never been on a leash before, or at least, he had never NOT pulled on a leash before. I’m 100 pounds and he was almost 60. All that was pu

[discussion] has your dog ever growled at you?Dog Talks

My dog has and when I talk to other dog owning friends they’re like “my dog would never growl at me even if I touched them in a spot they were in pain ect”. It makes me feel like my dog is...broken? He’s done it twice. Once over food (I’m not looking for advice we’re working with a trainer just giving context), and once recently maybe because I was cleaning out his ear and it was hurting him. Or he was tired because I called him out of bed late to do it. Or no reason and he was just being a dick. He’s just “being a dog” but I feel really like angry and offended over it. I’ve never had a dog before and I always thought dogs were supposed to like adorable cuddle monsters who just sort of tolerate everything. Naïve I know but that’s how my friends dogs seem. [Discussion] Best way to deal with an off the leash angry dog?Dog Talks

I was running in a park I often run on my road (UK), it's a large park and I see a lot of other walkers, runners, football matches, drone fliers and dog owners, 50/50 mix of on-lead and off-lead. As far as I know they are allowed to have their dogs off the lead in this park. I'm not familiar with dogs having never owned one but am looking for advice on something that happened last week on my last run, i like to run weekly in the same park. when I run i avoid people as much as possible but on this occasion I was approaching a woman dog owner stood to the side of the park in order to overtake her, giving us a good 10m distance when passing when all of a sudden a very large staffordshire bull terrier locked onto me from the middle of the park, obviously the pet of the woman I was passing and made a bee line for me, it made one pass from the front extremely aggressively, getting right in my face and barking loudly, going back on its haunches then leaping forward and back, snappi

[help] Adopted a rescue dog but has an on and off limping front paw- two vets said nothing was wrong, just a habit.Dog Talks

I recently adopted a dog from the pound in a country where the pet ownership is still a relatively new concept. I'm concerned about this limping front paw but the two vets I've been don't seem to be worried. Wondering if I should take the trip to a different well-known vet and get a 3rd opinion or am I worrying too much. He's somewhere between 2-5 years old and 7.5kg, relatively small dog. https://imgur.com/a/VOGvkBZ When we're not on a walk, he he uses the limping paw fine and puts weight on it but holds it up when standing up or sitting. However when we're on a walk, he changes between using it and not using it. He puts weight on it when we're walking fast but if we slow down, he stops using it and starts to hop around on three legs. He also seems to tend to hop on three legs more when he gets tired as well. The vet from the pound supposedly did x-rays and tests but couldn't find anything wrong with his leg so he suspected that he hurt it before and

[Help] On walks my dog goes crazy as soon as another dog is around, what do I do?Dog Talks

My newly adopted dog (2 year old female) is very well behaved and loves people including myself and strangers. She listens to me most of the time except as soon as another dog is around she goes crazy barking, pulling on the lead, yelping, etc. She isn’t aggressive at all once she approaches the other dog but there’s no way to control her until she meets them and gives them a sniff. She’s not motivated by food during these episodes and she ignores my voice completely. Pulling on the lead just makes her resist more. I really don’t want to do a shock collar because she’s not harming anything but I am afraid of intimidating other dog walkers because she really looks like she’s going to attack them and some people don’t want their dogs playing with other dogs on their walks. Is a shock collar the best solution? Other recommendations? Submitted November 11, 2020 at 11:46PM by JustMe-AP https://ift.tt/2IsCprF

[Help] Feeling a bit overwhelmed with a new rescue dogDog Talks

Hi everyone, I just adopted my first-ever dog and I’m feeling a little overwhelmed. Clover is a total sweetheart, very affectionate and without any major behavior issues that a little training can’t fix. At the shelter they told me she’s a 13-month-old golden retriever mix. She was totally emaciated when she first arrived at the shelter and she’s gained weight to be about 30 pounds, but she still looks pretty skinny to me. I’m a PhD student in the humanities and I’m home all day working on my dissertation, so I have plenty of time to interact with her. I enjoy hiking and running and I’d love for her to be a reliable companion on my outdoor adventures. Problem 1: Peeing. It seems like she wants to go out to pee a LOT (like every 2 hours). She peed on my living room carpet a couple of times so I rolled it up and put it away. When we go for walks she can easily pee 3-4 times in 10 minutes. Does that sound like a medical problem? A behavior issue that I can deal with in training? Or jus

[VENT] I rehomed my puppy and my heart is brokenDog Talks

Hi all, self explanatory title. My partner and I have rehomed our 5 month old border collie x jack russell after having her for 3 months. The reason we decided to rehome her was that our home environment didn’t match her energy. She always needed attention and playing and we couldn’t give that to her - so after much consideration, we though it’d be best to search for someone else to take her on so she’d be truly happy. We found someone who seem like they’ll do a really good job of caring for her. Having said this, I feel like my heart has broken into many pieces. I felt a really strong connection with our dog (besides the biting and scratching and constant barking and crying when she wouldn’t get played with) and now that connection is gone and I feel lost. I don’t know what emotions I’m supposed to feel right now. I’ve been crying for days and I can’t stop feeling guilty and upset and worried that we’ve done the wrong thing. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated Submit

Help me settle a disagreement: seatbelts for dogs [discussion]Dog Talks

My boyfriend and I try to take a day every weekend to go to a new dog friendly park (not necessarily a dog park, but on leash friendly ). He maintains that I’m a bit overprotective, I maintain that if we are taking drives of between 1 and 3 hours (our boy loves car rides) that he needs to be wearing his harness with padding and have a seatbelt (he also has a front clip one for walking, but I see the padding being better in case of an accident in terms of bruising) . Just last weekend it was my arm that stopped our pup from landing in the front seat because some jack wagon slammed in his breaks to take a dirt path off the interstate made by construction vehicles. Are there people who advise against seatbelts? For those of you who recommend them, is there one you like? Over the headrest or buckled in? [HELP] I got bit by a random dog at the dog park. I have a photo of the rabies tag but the owner wouldn’t fess up. Can I look the rabies certificate up anywhere?Dog Talks

My dog and I were attacked by a random dog at the dog park today. I got a few bites and my dog got a small nick. The offending dog was wrestled down my a bystander (not the owner) who helped me snap a photo of the rabies tag before we left. I got my bites stitched and glued shut but declined the rabies shots because my insurance doesn’t cover them. I’m taking my dog in at the earliest appointment to get her checked. I have been calling every vet in the area trying to look up the rabies vaccine number but all are turning up nothing. I don’t want to report it to animal control but I cannot find record of this anywhere. Submitted November 12, 2020 at 01:36AM by arsewarts1 https://ift.tt/2Uj8GEb
