[Help] My parents gave me a present puppy and I’m overwhelmedDog Talks

He’s 35 days old and we’ve never had a dog before. This is his second day here. I’ve been looking for guides around the internet and I honestly feel like I’ve been doing everything wrong. It also doesn’t help that the rest of my family doesn’t really seem to care (I live with my parents and my sister) He’s been pooping and peeing everywhere, we live in an apartment so it’s not really possible to just take him outside. I’ve been trying to get him to use the pad but he hasn’t used it much. He also doesn’t really know how to play so he’s just been biting everything. I feel really overwhelmed since my parents just showed up with him out of nowhere yesterday and even though I’m sure he’s wonderful I can’t help but feel stressed over everything that doesn’t seem to be going right. We don’t have a crane. Or some sort of “fence” to keep him from going to other places. We don’t have many toys either, he’s been playing with a ball and an old piece of cloth. He’s also scared of the floor in t...

Watched a dog get hit by a car and die [Help]Dog Talks

I don't have anyone at the moment to talk with in person about this and I'm feeling a bit traumatized. I'm an American living in Mexico City. Stray dogs can pretty much be found everywhere in the country. Many dog owners allow their dogs run freely on the streets. I live along a large avenue where speed limits are not enforced and cars drive at rapid speeds. I have a dog who I found on the street almost a year ago and though he's been a lot of work, he's absolutely my best friend. I was walking him this morning like we do everyday, on our way back to the apartment, and someone was blowing leaves, I was distracted cause there was lots of dirt in the air, and I stepped off the curb with my dog to avoid them. Got back on the curb as soon as we passed the leaf blower, suddenly I hear a car frantically braking and then a dog screaming. I turned around and saw the moment the dog got hit and it went rolling against the asphalt. It screamed in pain, tried to get up but co...

[Discussion] Empathy for the dog owners who "can't afford it"Dog Talks

I feel like there are many posts on here with people seeking help. And a lot of times, Captain Hindsight comes out of the woodwork to say "Why did you get a dog if you can't afford it?" Yes, there are always going to be a percentage of people that don't do their research. That get a dog or buy a puppy and then are unwilling to shell out the hundreds to thousands it takes for supplies and beginning vet bills. BUT, if someone comes on here seeking help, you don't know their situation. I make a decent living and have a cat (5) and a dog (3). I buy Wellness for both of them and spoil the hell out of them. Then I got divorced. Thankfully my ex husband did not want to fight over the animals. So I could keep my house, we bargained no alimony and i paid for the lawyer fees. It wiped all of my savings, and maxed out my credit card. I went for a time where I'd have to make $20 last a week. I'd cringe when I gassed my car, knowing I'd have to make a couple g...

[VENT] Just because your dog misbehaves once in a while doesn't mean you're a bad owner.Dog Talks

I see this everywhere. On IRL and Reddit, there will be a 10 second video of a dog stealing a steak from the counter, freaking out towards a cat or other animal, etc... and you just get hundreds of people saying how the owners are irresponsible and failed to train their dog. I was walking my dog the other day (1.5 year old, recently adopted FYI) and he saw a dog walker with three dogs and wanted to play so he lunged over. Lady next to me jokingly says "woah, someone needs to be trained!!" I have spent more than 1,000 dollars training my adopted dog and fixed tons of bad behaviors. Especially aggressiveness towards people with hats (Yes, I dont know what experiences he had on the street with people with hats) but my dog gets excited and acts like a dog and I'm a bad owner? Why do so many people have to act like Cesar Milan whenever they see a dog misbehave once? I have spent so much time, energy and money on helping my dog and whenever some of his street behavior come up ...

[VENT] Asshole owners who abandon their dogsDog Talks

Sorry for the long pissed off post to come but needed to get this out before I explode. Appreciate any kind thoughts, words, prayers, all the good stuff. Context: I had submitted an application to my local SPCA awhile back so when I finally got the call of a dog that could potentially match me, I was thrilled. I adopted a 7 year old mixed breed about a month ago that had been dumped at the SPCA. I was also told she was recently spayed by the SPCA. From the looks of it, she may have had some litters in the past. She's overweight and had developed cataracts in one eye but otherwise, is a good-natured, loving, overall perfect dog in my eyes. The SPCA did not mention any further medical worries I should look out for. After I brought her home, I did everything possible to make sure she never had to experience something as traumatic as being abandoned again, especially at her age, by spending maximum time with her, buying her all of the best stuff and even cooking her fave meals somet...

[Discussion] Unless You Support Puppy Mills - NEVER BUY FROM PUPPYSPOT (I hope mods sticky this as a PSA)Dog Talks

Mods, if you need verification, I am more than happy to give it to you privately.     With the pandemic, there are a lot of lonely folks looking for companionship, and almost everything can be found online/delivered. Including a puppy. Guys, if it looks too good to be true... it really is. Particularly in the case of PuppySpot.     I’ve left this review (below) of puppyspot on several sites already, and I want to leave it here as well to spread the word, so people stop supporting this horrible company.   A close relative of mine was duped into getting a puppy earlier this year, who arrived underweight, with multiple infections and parasites. I did some of my own investigating on the ‘reputable’ breeder the puppy came from, and he is a direct relative of several Amish puppy mill owners— one of which has a 20 year history of animal cruelty charges from his puppy mill practices. I’m certain it’s a family business. The parasites the puppy had often come from...

[Help]We just got a puppy and our other dog has gone a bit mental. What do I do?Dog Talks

We lost our dog a couple of weeks ago and we found an opportunity to buy a puppy. We took him home and our other dog seems to have gone crazy. Like he's gone feral or something. I don't know what to do. He's not an aggressive dog. He interacts with other dogs on our walks, but we don't know if he thinks the puppy is a rat or something. [vent][discussion] Bad dog day, someone remind me why we love our dogsDog Talks

I do love Finn, but she is the single most annoying dog I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. She's over a year and still hasn't grasped potty training (what is "asking to go outside"? - Finn), she never listens unless there is food , she screams at things for literally no reason , she can't deal with separation (unless it's on her terms aka running away). She's just so annoying . And I sometimes feel overwhelmed. Tell me good things your dog has done today which has made you love him/her so I remember why I love Finn. Also, how do you deal with your dog/keep your cool when you just are literally so mad them? Submitted November 07, 2020 at 12:47AM by EllaBoodle https://ift.tt/2TZfy9E

[vent] Overly friendly strangers need to go away.Dog Talks

Overly friendly strangers need to go away. This just happened and I’m still annoyed. My long haired chihuahua is nearing the end of his puppy days but still scares easily. He’s gotten better and as he’s grown older, I’ve been slowly introducing him to new things (new routes for walking, new public places, even exposing him to noises such as lawn mowers.) He’s still a little weird about strangers. Because of his size and the kind of dog he is, people are always cooing at him. It’s actually ok; I don’t mind as it helps him get better used to people outside. He prefers women and depending on his mood, he’ll be ok with someone trying to say hi. I don’t want to make him too uncomfortable so we’ll usually do a quick hello and keep walking unless he’s interested. Anyway, this is where tonight becomes part of this post. Doggie and I have a routine that took forever to get into. I walk him around the same time, and before I do I put his kibble in his bowl. Once he sees the kibble is availa...

[Discussion] Pet insurance - worth it or not?Dog Talks

I recently got a dog who is young and healthy. However I’m a dog hypochondriac and he seems to be pretty sensitive and prone to tummy issues. I already got him an x-Ray because he threw up one night and then the next morning. I heard insurance basically makes you “break even” assuming your pet has some health issues at the end of their lives. What are people’s experiences, or regrets regarding insurance? If it’s worth it, what providers do you recommend? Submitted November 06, 2020 at 07:14PM by dogenthusiastt https://ift.tt/32iFx0w

[DISCUSSION] After years of thinking about it, we're finally taking the plunge and switching to homemade dog food. The results have been better than I thought was possible.Dog Talks

She's a 10 year old pit mix, she's always had gastrointestinal issues, along with some skin allergies, and anxiety. She now has arthritis as well, and after attempting a diet using kibble + canned food for weight loss now that she's less active, we noticed she wasn't feeling well. (Lack of energy, GI issues) We are doing this all with the advice of her vet. We made a big batch of her food, and she's loving it, acting like herself again and her GI issues have resolved for the most part, her energy is increased. It's such a relief after seeing her struggling so much. Plus, we're already saving money by making it ourselves. This batch, which lasts her approx 2 weeks, her food is: 5lbs lean ground turkey 10 egg whites 1/2lb chicken livers 1.5 cup cooked rice (we will be switching to brown rice next batch) I cup chopped carrots 1 cup chopped broccoli 1 cup chopped sweet potato 1 cup chopped spinach 1 cup chopped green beans 1 cup peas 3 tablespoon...

[Help] Golden Retriever AggressionDog Talks

Two nights ago the jack russel that is living upstairs attacked my golden retriever. my golden retriever was very nervous and ran away when this happened. Tonight, the jack russel tried to take a toy away from my golden retriever. They started growling at each other and my golden retriever attacked the jack russel. My golden retriever has never shown any sign of aggression towards anyone or any animal. she is afraid of her own shadow. I am wondering if this attack was brought on by the previous attack. I am worried she will become aggressive towards other animals. Am I overthinking this? Submitted November 06, 2020 at 01:58AM by goldenretriever1998 https://ift.tt/32mYBun

[Discussion] Genuine question about mixed-breed dogsDog Talks

Hello! I see a lot of posts here discussing unethical breeding practices associated with mixed breed pups such as doodles and others. After reading through countless posts and the entirety of their comments, I still have a question about it. I'm here to learn, and this is a genuine question, so please don't downvote me or be nasty!! I don't know much about dogs and dogs breeding and hoping to learn more. Many comments suggest that the dogs that are used to breed these mixed-breed pups aren't health tested. From my understanding of what people are saying, breeders of real purebreds would not give their dogs to be bred for mixed-breeds. My question is why not? The research I've done about dogs in general is that all the breeds we have today were bred as mixes of other dogs over thousands of years. Even poodles, golden retrievers, Yorkshire terriers etc. are all mixes of other dogs that happened a long time ago. So, are we no longer breeding new breeds? Is it inheren...

[help] I am constantly stressed over my dogs wellbeing.Dog Talks

Hi all. first post! I have a wonderful, energetic beagle. He’s just about 1y 5mo, and he is lovely. But there is a downside, I cannot ever stop thinking about his wellbeing. Be it whether we’re laying down, on a walk, playing, even just standing there I’m constantly fearing he is sick or something is wrong. Every time I look at him the thoughts run through my head “is he breathing ok? why is his tongue slightly less pink? does he seem out of it? why is he licking his paws?” as soon as I have a thought like this my stomach begins to turn with fear that something is wrong with him and I start feeling nauseous. Of course I google the supposed symptoms and that leads me on a tangent of “what if it’s this? or this?” all of which results are usually terrible health problems or something as simple as allergies, then I start thinking about calling the vet but again, what if it’s nothing? then I’ll just look like a paranoid maniac calling the vet 4 times a week because my dog sneezed funny. [RIP] Cushion, 10Dog Talks

We let our Japanese Spitz, Cushion go yesterday. He suffered from kidney failure - I’m guessing from a combination of too many operations under general anaesthesia and diet choices. Cushion had a history of abscesses and we decided to operate on some of them. We weren’t properly informed that the operations would have negative effects on the kidney, until his latest operation three months ago. That was the most required operation as he had several mouth abscesses and had to extract some teeth out. At the same time, my family loved to give Cushion treats. I really regretted not being firmer and giving into their pressure, and being away from him in the middle of his life for uni. Maybe if I had been here his diet could’ve been controlled better. Cushion’s abscesses did not get better post-op and the swelling continued. They couldn’t drain it out because his creatine was too high and he couldn’t undergo another operation. His creatine level was at 13 and the vets said it was astonish...

Please help haha Its Spring in Australia so prime shedding season. We got our adult lab just over a month ago and the shedding is IN.SANE. My family has a German Shepherd and I grew up with a Husky, and I've still never seen this level of shedding. I have to vaccuum twice a day and brush him three times a day and every day the hair clogs the vacuum cleaner. I need tips for good brushes or methods to control the shedding. I actually don't mind that much, I know its part of having a dog, but I'm definitely open to the option of having to vacuum less and not cover all my furniture with sheets 😂 I don't know why but I just never thought about Labs being big shedders. [Discussion] A harness saved my dog's life.Dog Talks

Went for a hike today with my dog (5 years-old, golden retriever/lab mix) and once we got home, I noticed a black dog run over to us from our yard. I didn’t put two and two together at first and thought it was my friend’s dog, but realized it was the neighbor’s pit bull that had gotten loose into our yard. My dog was leashed and wearing a vested harness. This pit bull has a long history of aggression, and has killed another small dog when it was on a walk with their owner. Ran straight out of the yard and into the street as they were walking by the house. My dog immediately tensed up since she just ran up to us, sniffed him, and immediately latched onto his neck. I couldn’t for the life of me pry her off of him, my dog was screaming and trying to attack back and even when I managed to get a hold of the other dog and lift her off the ground, she still wasn’t letting go. Her hold on my dogs neck loosened up and I managed to get her off of him, the moment I see the owner waltzing over...

[vent] I don’t care what you think about how I got my dogDog Talks

I panic bought my dog in March, right as the pandemic was hitting my part of the country. I had been perusing shelter websites and I talked to my good friend and colleague who volunteers at a shelter. At that stage, all my local shelters had closed. I live in a HUGE county so basically this meant no shelter dogs for the foreseeable future and I had recently hit a major wall in my career progress. Basically I was incredibly depressed. I found myself poring over Craigslist ads for days on end. So many backyard breeders. Finally I found a posting that seemed genuine. A family 1.5 hours drive away had found themselves with 3 puppies on top of four unfixed small dogs (gee, maybe fixing your dogs is a good idea!) and they could not afford to keep the puppies. They were 3 months old and unvaccinated. The seller listed them as “maltipoo” but the asking price was under $150 and negotiable. So I lowballed and he accepted (his mom was making him rehome the puppies, he was sad but also too young...

I have a psychiatric service dog in training, and she's my lifeline. she alerts me to panic attacks before they happen and responds accordingly to what I need from her in the moment. however, people are OBSESSED with her. they stare and go like AWWWW SHE'S SO CUTE and my dog often gets lunged at by toddlers. gladly, my dog is very confident and she isn't very reactive to her surroundings. she's back up from being startled in a few seconds, and she's becoming increasingly attentive to me. I understand that service dogs aren't a thing you see every day, and they may be pretty cool. however, this does NOT give you the right to come up to my dog and potentially distract her! no, she doesn't want your pets. she doesn't want your treats. she does not need your attention! would you do it to someone's heart monitor? no? then don't do it to my service dog! she's medical equipment and should be treated as such. [Discussion] What do you like about owning a big dog?Dog Talks

We recently brought home our first real big dog. The biggest dog we’ve really had was 30lbs. She’s a GSD and is 64 lbs with the need to add maybe 5 more? I love being able to stick my hand out (5’4) and pat her head right next to my hip. She’s so much fun to snuggle and so soft. [Discussion] PSA: caterpillars are VERY poisonous to dogs.Dog Talks

I was walking my dog, and found a cute fuzzy caterpillar on the ground. I try to introduce new things to my dog, because he was a rescue and is mostly unsure/insecure about a lot of things. So I pointed out the caterpillar gasp whats that? He got close and sniffed it, and made a funky face, and started to salivate a little. So I prompted him again, thinking thats a weird reaction. And he salivated a lot more. I had no idea why he reacted like that, so I googled it and sure enough, caterpillars are very poisonous to dogs. In fact, if a dog ate one, it could very likely cause death from a severe allergic reaction by closing up the esophagus. Anyways, this was a "cute, innocent moment" that I realize could have gone south very quick. Just wanted to let others know.
