[Help] Do you express your dog’s anal glands? I have a senior who needs it frequently. https://ift.tt/eA8V8J Today we heard her crying at the vet as they expressed them. We waited too long and it broke my heart. We learned she needs her anal glands expressed every 3 WEEKS. It was a month since her last time and the vet tech said they were very full and painful. That’s eye opening to us since we had (have) two younger large dogs before we got her. They have never had an anal gland issue. We have the money and time to take her to the vet every 3 weeks but the internet is saying to do it ourselves. Is there a danger to that? Might we miss something or do it incorrectly? My husband is a medical professional and is willing to learn how to do it correctly. We just wanted to be cautious and hear all sides before trying to do something like that on our own. My little girl means the WHOLE WORLD to me and I am willing to pay for a professional to do it if y’all think we should. Disclaimer: I’m sorry for ALL of the questions. We adopted our senior knowing we were inexperienced. We were/are very willing to learn and do what was needed. She desperately needed a home and we wanted to help. I love her more than anything. :) She takes so much care of me too. dogs balcony-gardener

[Help] What is the best carpet powder deodorizer for dog pee? https://ift.tt/eA8V8J My 4 y/o Aussie had a couple accidents on our carpet stair landing and it now smells of pee, even after I (accidentally) used a bleach cleaning spray on the area. Please help! What have you used and found that worked? Ideally looking for a powder so it can be vacuumed up, but I’m open to suggestions. TIA dogs janevio

[Help] My puppy is super itchy and has red eyes? He also turns into a demon at night? https://ift.tt/eA8V8J So my new puppy is 14 weeks old and he’s always super itchy. He uses his mouth to bite his feet and private part area. He uses his feet to scratch the parts he can’t reach with his mouth. he does this all throughout the day. His eyes are also red (the part that’s suppose to be white). I’m not sure what it could be. I gave him a bath three days ago and I applied some Flea Killing liquid gel you put from the shoulders to the tale. Another thing he does which might be unrelated is he goes wild at night. Turns into a demon. Biting everything (including us), running against things, not listening, growling, etc Could he have some infection? Anybody ever had anything close to this problem? I really hope it’s nothing serious. For the most part he’s a good boy. dogs KingLou772

[discussion] is it normal dogs to run up to other dogs to greet them at the dog park? https://ift.tt/eA8V8J I have a 7 month old GSD who I have put a TON of work into because of her leash reactivity and honestly one of the most helpful things for me has been taking her to off-leash parks...it helps her exercise, socialize, has been great to work on recall and other training in high distraction environments. She is actually very gentle, especially for her age as far as reading cues and backing off when dogs don’t want to play. She has never gotten into a fight and when dogs have snapped at her for being annoying she has always backed off. So my question is-is it normal for dogs to run up to greet each other or is my dog being rude? When a new dog enters the park she will sometimes run up to sniff it and sometimes try to play with it (like I said if the dog isn’t interested she has always backed off and i call her back if I can tell the dog isn’t having it from the start). My girl was rough-housing with another dog at the park this morning, both having a great time. Another dog of similar size entered the park. Everyone noticed and after a few minutes my dog ran over to do her usual sniff and greet-I say ran because it’s important...she didn’t walk over. The owner of New Dog body blocked my girl and grabbed onto her to prevent her from interacting with his dog who was sniffing around. I ran over when I saw what he was doing, by the time I got to her she was throwing a fit because some man had grabbed her and wasn’t letting go of her harness...I honestly didn’t have time to have a real conversation because my dog had gotten upset and started barking and I was focused on redirecting her from him at this point. He RAN out of the park with his dog. Is it possible he noticed something in her behavior that I didn’t? Is it rude for my dog to run to greet another dog? We’ve never had a bad interaction before and if a dog in the past doesn’t want to play they just go their separate ways. dogs whiskersandwhiskey

[BREEDS] Thanks for helping me buy my first dog! https://ift.tt/eA8V8J **Introduction** Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs? * This will be my (27F) first dog. I have wanted one for a long time but a combination of renting, work and timing haven’t worked out. 2) Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a [reputable breeder]( http://ownresponsibly.blogspot.com/2011/07/identifying-reputable-breeder.html)? * I would prefer to buy a dog from a breeder where I can have their genetic background and an ongoing relationship (however small) to their family. 3) Describe your ideal dog. * Smart, playful, good around strangers and other dogs, low noise and able to be trained. I’d like to be able to run with the dog (when safe) but also not be worried when its at home about it being destructive. Low shedding would also be good- I can get hayfever. I'll admit I love beautiful, strong looking dogs like Collies. 4) What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why? * Border Collies were my go to, prior to reading about them on this sub! They are beautiful, smart and social, but my partner and I will be working long term. Bordoodle is then a good question- lower maintainance and non-shedding coat? Also considering a goldendoodle (similar logic). Would love some more diverse suggestions though! 5) What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do? * Obedience commands, games (fetch etc), household commands- so smart but nothing too fancy! 6) Do you want to compete with your dog in a sport (e.g. agility, obedience, rally) or use your dog for a form of work (e.g. hunting, herding, livestock guarding)? If so, how much experience do you have with this work/sport? * NA- and no experience. **Care Commitments** 7) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day? * I will be studying med for the first 4 years of its life so should be around reasonably frequently at home. Could spend 3 hours per day with the dog out and about- morning walk for an hour and then things like sports in the evenings. 8) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park? * We live right next to a huge dog park so easily an hour every morning, and then out in the evenings (walks to breweries, sport etc). We’re happy for exercise to be scaled up to satisfy the right dog, but lead pretty active lives already. 9) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly? * Willing to do brushing but preferably low maintenance coat- don’t want shedding all over the furniture. Happy to clean ears etc but don’t want goopy eyes (e.g. some cavaliers etc). **Personal Preferences** 10) What size dog are you looking for? * Medium, we dont like tiny dogs. 11) How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle? * Low tolerance for all 3 12) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area? * Very important- we want to be able to take them on off-leash walks. **Dog Personality and Behavior** 13) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space? * Snuggly but not clingy/ anxious 14) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please? * Eager to please 15) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors? * I’m fine with enthusiasm but don’t want them pulling or scarring people. I recognise training will be an important component of that. 16) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs? * I’m willing to pursue extra training if that behaviour arises, but I do not want a dog breed that has any consistent aggressive tendencies. 17) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid? * Barking during the day if I’m not there- destructiveness in the house. **Lifestyle** 18) How often and how long will the dog be left alone? * For the first 4 years the maximum would ever be 5 hours. Most days much less though. After 4 years partner and I will both be working, but differing hours so shouldn’t be too bad. Our parents live close and are retired and willing to be involved during busy periods, so at worst can get them (or a paid employee) to walk the dog during the day. 19) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog? * None, only partner and I. 20) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they? * Planning on getting a kitten after seeing how the pup settles in. Can delay that as needed. 21) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly? * Not young children, but coming from a large family I want the dog to be fine with kids. We will probably have kids after a few years also. 22) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease? * NA- own. 23) What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds? * NSW Australia- wouldn’t want any banned breeds (would be ones thought of as aggressive). 24) What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live? * Summer – 30, Winter- 18 celcius **Additional Information and Questions** 25) Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant. Partner and I are both disciplined adults- he is nearly finished his medical degree and I've worked professionally for a number of years before starting mine. While I know this is our first dog, we're very willing to put in the work, time and money to getting the right breed raised well. Thank you for your advice! dogs beentheredangnabbit

[Help] My dog bit another dog and may have killed it https://ift.tt/eA8V8J Today I took my dog for a walk an passed a couple walking their dogs (they were in thier 40's I am still a teen) they had a pomeranian and a german sheperd mix who kept on running after my pittie which no harm done but I passed them three times so I thought I would give them a tip that distracting your dog helps because they seemed new anyways I striked a nice conversation and my dog started playing with the other (the pomerianin) I laughed of that my dog was slowly wrapping the girl in the couple but then I came in to stop her all of the sudden the pomeranin bit my pittie and my dog bit her back she had almost a death grip on the dog and had to pry her jaw off with my hands the dog was still breathing but showed no motion but they picked the pomeranian fast I immediately checked on it and told them to take it to an emergency room nearby (this has never happened) the guy kept on saying "she is dead, she is dead" and that scared me a lot I don't know what they did after but I was so scared for my dog and their dog I was so scared that the dog was dead and I just needed to vent my pittie is a rescue and we have had for three months. P.S The dog was being bit for 14-15 seconds,The guy was kicking and punching my dog not allowing me to get through, the dog would have died or died faster If It weren't for me prying my dog away and there dogs were aggresive first (I am not trying to show that It was not or was my fault and just want assurance and or other dog owners input) dogs Dragonborn5000

[Help] My family adopted a new dog and we're concerned for her https://ift.tt/eA8V8J Im on mobile and this is long and all over the place. I apologize. Ive just never dealt with this before and I would like some advice. Tuesday night, my mom went to meet a woman who was trying to rehome her dog - a 3 year old rat terrier/Chihuahua mix. The only reason she said she wanted to rehome her is because her husband is very ill (he looked it) and she cant take care of the dog and her husband while working full time. Except, she had another larger dog that she didnt seem to want to rehome. So we're kind of suspicious. My mom wasnt going to take her at first but she seemed neglected. She smelled of urine very badly, her coat was filthy and her nails were painfullly long. So she took the dog home anyway. The dog isnt fixed, didnt get any shots and seemed to have a litter/s of puppies as there are clear sign shes nursed before. We asked if she had any health issues and the woman said no, but she obviously hasnt been to a vet ever. The dog apparently has never been outside in her life. Not even a walk. She only used wee pads indoors and has been eating low quality puppy food her whole life. For 3 whole years. Sad. Shes been GLUED to mostly my mothers lap. Even when we took her out in our huge yard, she didnt leave my moms side and kept asking to be picked up. This dog has no boundaries at all, super clingy. Its fine for now but it does get irritating. Esepcially when were trying to eat. From Tuesday until today, she barely ate anything and wouldnt drink water at all. My moms been using a syringe to force a little water in her mouth a few times throughout the day and shes only been interested in people food. Shes only peed one time yesterday and hasnt pooped at all. Today she finally ate some dog food and drank water on her own. Its been 4 hours since then and she still hasnt used the bathroom. Her vet appointment isnt until next week but I got her into a groomer today (thank goodness) to get her nails trimmed as they were affecting the way she walks. It made a huge difference. She immediately looked relieved. We have to take her back in 3 weeks to get them trimmed again because they werent able to trim much this time without causing her to bleed. We also gave her a thorough bath. She was a champ through all of it. I'm thinking shes just in shock because it was such a big change for her. She's very very timid and has to be in someones lap at all times. She doesnt show much emotion either. When the rest of my family met her, she didnt do anything. Not even a sniff. She was stone faced. She isnt afraid of any of us but her tail has been tucked pretty much the whole time being here. The original owner had repeatedly texted us to see how shes doing and seems upset. We asked her what the dogs normal behavior is and all she says is "shes a lap dog". She wont give details at all. So im thinking they were either really irresponsible dog owners and were too poor to give her a proper life/abusive/neglectful. My mom thinks they were breeding her for money and had no use for her anymore. Its sad how many people have dogs that shouldnt. But im just happy shes free. Anyway, id just like some insight until we take her to the vet. What are your opinions/advice? What can we do to make her more relaxed and open up - be the dog that she should be. I want her to live a full healthy life but im stumped. Ive always had dogs with huge personalities, even from broken homes. Shes only been here 3 days so we're being patient. She seems to be coming around today just because she ate and drank but shes still empty. TL;DR Our new family dog is very timid. Isnt using the bathroom and barely drinks water/eats. We suspect the original owners were super irresponsible/neglectful and I need advice on how to help her. EDIT: I just took her on a long walk and she still hasnt used the bathroom. I'm now trying to show her her wee pad but she just wants to lay in my lap. dogs veamiic

"It's OK my dog's friendly" [Discussion] https://ift.tt/eA8V8J Ok so I know a lot of people who barely train their dogs at all because their dogs are good natured and friendly with everyone, which is good, but I think it's kind of a problem not training them. I have a reactive dog, so I try and avoid other dogs on our walks but occasionally we have to walk past other dogs and I'd appreciate if people got used to asking before letting their dogs run up to others, cos when I start fast walking away/restraining my dog so many people are like "it's OK my dog's friendly" like OK, that's good, but my dog's not 😂 she's just not comfortable with other dogs and she will snap and growl at them, which has ended badly before. Also not all people are comfortable having dogs run up to them, my little sister (8) is autistic and she likes dogs but she is scared of them touching her (sensory overload issues) and this one time a dog ran up to her on the beach and she ran away screaming and crying, the owner didn't even go after their dog, just let it chase her and told my mum "it's OK he's really friendly" I just wish people could understand the importance of training friendly dogs, not just for others but for their own dogs safety! What are your thoughts? dogs ZiggyandNico

[Fluff] Doggo found an interesting chill spot... https://ift.tt/eA8V8J My dog is definitely a weird one. For context, my husband and I have kennel trained our 9 mo. GSD/border collie mix. We also live in a studio apartment, so his kennel is right behind our couch, and the top of it is eye level with the back of it. Lately, we think Danni (puppo) has finally discovered "his place," after 3 months of having him. It's not the couch, or our bed, or the inside of his kennel, but on top of the kennel. He'll hop up there from the couch or bed, and just chill with one of his toys. 😂 (We put blankets on top of it so that when he'd jump on/over it he wouldn't hurt his paws.) [Discussion] My dog sometimes makes me look like a battered woman https://ift.tt/eA8V8J I have a 140 lb cane corso that just turned 1 in May. He is a ball of energy and loves playing but sometimes he forgets that he is the size of a full grown human and made of pure muscle. A couple of days ago, I was playing with him and he jumped up to grab the toy I had just won and his face hit the bridge of my nose and broke it! I have two black eyes and my nose is a bit puffy. I went to my doctor to make sure everything was good since it bled a lot and they kept asking me if I felt safe at home and if anyone would hurt me, etc. On top of that some other times he will swat me while we play so I get a few bruises. Though, in his defense, I bruise SUPER easily and get bruises from him just jumping up next to me cuddle. I assured my doctor that it was just my dog and that I live alone with him so I'm safe and she got a pretty good kick out of that. As a note, my dog is actually very well behaved. He listens to commands and doesn't ever get rough with anyone. I only ever get marks because he is very large and he plays tug like his life depends on it and the bruises don't hurt, I'm just a peach. He did seem to be very regretful that he hurt my nose though and has been extra sweet to me the past couple of days! dogs bon3rch4mp

[Discussion] Common crossbreed myths https://ift.tt/eA8V8J This is just a general discussion post about crossbred dogs, based in part on my experiences with them. If you've seen me kicking around the subreddit, you probably know that I'm pretty open to purposeful crossbreeding, and even mixed breeding, if it is done well. But a lot of times, it's not (the same is true of purebred breedings tbh but that's another post). I've seen a recent uptick in crossbred litters in my area, and a lot of the ads promise the same things: The best attributes of each breed Hybrid vigour (or "healthier than a purebred") A way to own X breed in Y form On the surface, these promises are attractive, so I think it's worthwhile to push back at the logic underpinning each of these assertions so that people can make informed decisions about the dogs they bring home. Also I'm trying to avoid work at the moment. A crossbred dog will inherit the best attributes of each parent breed. Man do I wish this was true. And is it ever marketed like you can control genetic distribution: the Doodle world is particularly bad for leaning on Poodle coat inheritance as an attractive feature of the cross. But we know genetics don't work like that -- did you inherit the best attributes of your parents? If you did, lucky you. But most of us probably wound up with crooked teeth, or shoddy eyesight, or a tendency towards anxiety, or any of the myriad other traits our parents rolled the dice on. Dog breeding isn't any different. In fact, one of the upsides of purebred breeding is a rather limited variation in traits (but sometimes at the expense of genetic diversity). But when you're dealing in crosses, now you've got two breed gene pools to contend with. Does that mean that every cross will be a random mishmash of genetic inheritance? No, not really. In the horse world, you can sometimes register a horse as a certain breed if it looks like and performs like that breed, no closed studbook necessary (Quarter Horses, for example). But when you cross, generally, what you're looking at instead is a wider spectrum of traits to contend with: the Poodle coat AND the Lab coat, the Great Pyr suspicion of strangers AND the Golden's sociability. How those traits shake out in reality is different for each individual puppy, even puppies in a litter. It's why an F2 cross (Doodle to Doodle) will likely produce a high degree of variety between littermates: you now have two Lab lines and two Poodle lines to contend with. That's where things start getting dicey. In a cross between relatively similar breeds -- let's say Labs and Goldens -- the spectrum of traits you'd expect to see is a little less expansive than a cross between relatively dissimilar breeds, like maybe a Livestock Guardian Dog and a Sighthound. Wouldn't it be great if you could get a leaner bodied but still hardy dog, with some Borzoi sweetness and LGD fearlessness? But what if instead you got a really fast and really antisocial dog who only wants to hang out with sheep and sometimes chase them around? Which leads me to Crosses benefit from hybrid vigour and are healthier than purebreds Again a marketing quip that particularly unscrupulous breeders of crosses love to tout. If you have two breeds with little overlap in health concerns -- let's say one breed with MDR1 as a concern and the other without -- you're unlikely to run into an issue with MDR1 *to start*. But if both breeds can have MDR1, you'd best be testing the parent generations to ensure you aren't breeding carriers and affecteds. The logic that breeding two different breeds together always results in healthier offspring is a pretty clever way for some breeders of crosses to avoid health testing their stock. Using BorderPaps as an example, OFA.org recommends individuals of both breeds have their eyes examined -- Paps every other year, BCs yearly until the age of seven. Knowing this, if you were pursuing a BorderPap, you'd be wise to insist that the parents had had their eyes tested despite them being different breeds. Actually, you'd be wise to verify that both parents received the complete spectrum of health testing for their respective breeds. I can't tell you how many large breed to large breed crosses I worked with who had hip dysplasia. Or food allergies. Or skin issues. The fact that they have parents of two different breeds did not make them immune to heritable health issues. There are a lot of overlaps among purebred dogs when it comes to health issues, so crossing is not a guarantee of good health. Does that mean that purebred dogs are healthier than crossbred dogs? Nope. Lots of people in that world skip on health testing too. Diligence and information is your friend in either case. And finally, A cross lets you have X breed in Y form This is similar to the first point about inheriting the best traits. Usually I see this idea framed around size: mini Huskies, mini Rotties, mini Mastiffs (that one's a mindbender). The Pomsky as a "mini husky" is a good example of this -- all the sass and character of the Husky in a much easier to catch and contain body. This logic often accompanies breedings between vastly different dogs, usually with the aim of using one breed's size as a goal with the other breed's temperament. Sport cross breedings can fall into this trap: the brains of the BC with the smaller structure of the Papillon. But sometimes you get neither of those things. Or you get a weak-kneed, neurotic BorderPap who is 18lbs and 15.5" at the shoulder, and still has to run in a more competitive class in agility. At that point, a Sheltie might have been a better choice. Like I said, I'm not against purposeful crossing or mixing, but I am against shoddy breeding and predatory marketing. I had to learn these lessons with my first dog, a GSD x Golden who loved people, hated other dogs, and had itchy skin, a bad gut, and sore hips all his life. Genetics play a huge role in temperament, structure, and health. If you are considering a cross, ask yourself: is the breeder doing the recommended health testing on the parent dogs? what promises about the cross are being made? what does the cross improve on from the parent breeds? what is the purpose for the cross? Unfortunately, you are unlikely to find many cross breeders investing in health testing, demonstrating their dogs' attributes, or offering much in the way of buyer support. That doesn't mean they don't exist, but it does mean that finding one is going to take a lot more work than finding a purebred breeder hitting those marks. If you are looking at shelter dogs, it's also worthwhile considering the breeds assessed as being part of the dog's makeup. Breed guesses are low accuracy for the most part, but if you see a dog marked as a "Lab x Anatolian", it's worth asking yourself if you'd be willing to deal with a dog who might have inherited the least ideal traits of two very dissimilar breeds. Anyway, back to work for me. Thanks for reading. dogs ardenbucket

[Help] What to say to a neighbor who hasn't tried to do anything about their constantly barking dog https://ift.tt/eA8V8J My upstairs neighbor's dog barks non-stop from 9am-6pm and sometimes late into the evening because the owner is gone. I work from home, so it's quite an issue for me. Here is what I've done: Left a polite note on their door alerting them that their dog barks most of the day. ("Not sure if you're aware, but your dog can be heard barking through the floor" kind of note) Contacted my landlord who has spoken with them twice about it. Notified animal control in my city who has sent them a "warning" letter. I chose to have my landlord talk to them about it because it seemed like the most neutral solution. She's a very nice lady. I'm not sure I want to escalate anything further with animal control (although it is concerning that they are hardly ever home...), so I'm wondering if anyone has ideas of what to say to them in person?? I don't want to sound accusatory or angry and I'm not sure how they'll react, plus I'm quite introverted, so I'm having a hard time picturing how an in-person conversation would go. Has anyone had a successful conversation about this sort of thing? dogs ilysmtihmh

[Help] My dogs got in a fight https://ift.tt/eA8V8J So I have four dogs that generally get along very well. I live on a large farm so they get to be inside and outside as well as have free range of the land. Tonight I came home and I heard my dogs start fighting (yelping and growling) I could hear them but I couldn’t see them because they were in very tall grass. Long story short My dog Bella had been attacked under her right front leg. It was not good but she will be okay (she is with the vet and will just need some stitches). I believe my other dog is the one that attacked her because she had a little bit of blood on her... not much but a few small spots. Is there any chance of reconciliation of the two dogs. Should I rehome one of them. This is really hurting my heart because I love them both so much and I have no idea why this happened. It’s devastating and I don’t know what to do. Advice please :( dogs theatrelassie
