[Help] Our dog HATES being alone. COVID made it worse. How do we fix this behaviour?Dog Talks

My boyfriend and I have a 13 month old cocker spaniel, Beans He is a GREAT dog (absolutely perfect) who is easy to train except for a few behaviour issues (ex. he knows when we’re calling him but he just does his own thing) that we are working on correcting. However, the one thing I can’t see him manage is getting him to be okay when we leave. We had only had him 3 months when quarantine started, and in between March-June he was only alone MAYBE once (boyfriend was on the opposite schedule so I’d basically get home from work when he left). He has ALWAYS hated being alone. We initially crate trained him, but after a few months of him resisting his kennel we eventually let him sleep with us. However, we had always used to kennel for when we leave. A few weeks ago we started testing just leaving him in the bedroom while we are gone. I would rather in the end be able to leave him home just around the house, but we aren’t there yet. He did great for the first little while, but then my bo

[Help] my 5 year old Great Pyrenees mix all of a sudden doesn’t like our 9 month old Lab mix.Dog Talks

Just what the title says! I adopted a puppy, Kinnon, from our local shelter in April. Lily, our other pup loved him when we brought him home. They played all the time and Lily was helping Kinnon become more confident. Over the summer we tried to socialize Kinnon as much as we could. He learned to behave around people as well as 5-8 other dogs. Lily was there every time in case he needed the confidence boost. Now that it’s getting colder we haven’t been able to go out as much. It’s hard to social distance outside like that. Lily wants almost nothing to do with Kinnon. She only plays with him a few times a week at best. She also won’t eat her food unless he’s near her. This is so out of character for her! I adopted her when she was 2 and she has loved every dog we’ve met since then. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Pictures of both of the pups are in my post history if you’re curious. Submitted October 25, 2020 at 02:08AM by jenikat_ https://ift.tt/31WqERp

[DISCUSSION] Is It Normal For A Border Collie To "Talk" To A Light Switch?Dog Talks

This sounds so strange but hear me out. My dog lives with my dad and ever since we got her she used to jump at the light switch at the living room. Now she's 7, she just stands at it and growls at it as if she's talking to it. She'll do it no matter the time or occasion and shows her new toys to the light switch whenever she gets them. And will often sit and stare at it tilting her head the same way she does if we talk to her in baby voice. Does anyone else's dog do weird things like this? [Help] Dog Pawing and Whining at Food BowlsDog Talks

I have an (approx) 4 year old Border Collie rescue, and for about the last 2 weeks, he has been acting weird with both his food and water bowls. He’ll approach them super slowly like he’s unsure or scared of them. Then he’ll whine and scratch at the floor and tilt and turn his head like he sees something in there. He’ll do it every few days with his water bowl and almost every time I put food in his bowl now. His bowls are the same ones he’s had for the 3 years I’ve had him, and he’s eating the same exact food he always has. Any explanation for this? Or does anyone else’s dog do this? [Help] Walking Dog and COVIDDog Talks

I recently got tested for COVID, I only have some minor symptoms (sore throat-that’s it), but want to be safe just in case and got tested. I only leave my house to walk my dog and go grocery shopping, so those are the only possibile situations where I could have gotten it. Until I receive my results, I’m supposed to self isolate. I have an energetic dog who loves (and needs) walks/runs. Does anyone have advice to navigate this situation? Should I still walk him? I dont want to find out I’m positive and potentially spread it, even though I ALWAYS mask up, I’m really scared about potentially harming others. UPDATE: Thank you for the advice, I will not be leaving my apartment until I get the results, assuming they come back negative. This is the only responsible solution. I’ve been able to coordinate with my neighbor for her to take my dog on walks and have contactless pick up/drop off. Submitted October 24, 2020 at 07:35PM by ScienceNerd771 https://ift.tt/31HtAkF

[Help] Has this bruise turned black?Dog Talks

[Discussion] I'm a shocked by a dog aggressionDog Talks

Good evening everyone, I'm sorry if I make any mistake but English isn't my first language. Right now I'm a little bit shocked and I would like to cry. I explain you what happened. I was at home, my dog was sleeping calmly and suddenly she woke up and run at the door. I stood up and nothing was wrong. Time that I go back to the kitchen and I hear from the outside a dog screaming, crying. I went to see what was happening and the worst thing was going on. A pitbull was biting aggressively another smaller dog and he was crying loudly. I can hear in my head that, so heartbreaking. There were like 4 people trying to divide them but they couldn't do nothing. They also tried to use a lighter and "burn" the nose of the pitbull but it didn't work. At the end of 2 minutes they used pepper spray and the pitbull opened the mouth. The other dog fled and his owner run after him. Now that I'm writing this they haven't found him yet. The owner of the pitbull was

[Fluff] [Discussion] My dog self-regulated his hyper energy this morning!Dog Talks

This is a really big deal because our sweet boy hasn’t had the best self-regulation skills. He’s part GSP, quite high energy, and less than a year and a half old, and has been prone to getting overexcited and doing silly things as a result - up to and including mouthing us kinda hard because he wants to start an unwanted sudden game of tug/wrestle with sweater sleeves. We’ve been working with him, giving him mental exercise along with physical, swapping out inappropriate chews for better ones, using timeouts and reverse timeouts when he gets too hype so he can calm down without our presence, and teaching him to wait using the Overall relaxation protocol, and we’ve definitely seen improvement but it’s an ongoing experiment. Anyway! Today, a courier mistakenly brought a grocery delivery to our door instead of our neighbours’ and his guard dog routine got him hyped up when he’d usually be cuddling with us in bed, so much so that after the delivery guy left, he jumped up on me when he di

[Help] Any recommendations for a backpack to carry my corgi?Dog Talks

My corgi (6 years old, 25lbs) tires out a lot faster than my border collie when we go hiking. He used to keep up okay but he's getting older and I'd like to have a backpack I can put him in when he's tired and me and my bc are still going. Does anyone have recommendations? He's long and low, so I'm worried about finding something he'll be comfortable in. I'm also concerned about his back with the style that has the dog upright. He'd likely only be in it for less than an hour at a time though so maybe it would be okay? Cost isn't too big of an issue as I'm willing to invest in something high quality and sturdy. [Help] Any advice for turmeric stains on carpet?Dog Talks

I've recently started giving my dog turmeric supplements for his arthritis which has been working wonderfully so far. One thing I've noticed is if he happens to ever vomit it now leaves a bad turmeric stain after cleaning it up. So far the carpet cleaners I've used to clean vomit in the past have proven to be ineffective (they get up everything except the turmeric pretty much). Anyone have any tips for getting these out? [fluff] Anyone else have a double-coated dog that's blowing out this time of year?Dog Talks

There wasn't too much hair in the house this summer from my 6 yo Bouvier. I generally comb him out once or twice a week. I'll do it indoors with a long-toothed comb, or outdoors with a short-toothed comb (the undercoat just flies all over the place). The past week or so has seen an abundance of hairballs in the house. And I can't say it's because he's indoors any more, or longer, than usual. Seems strange to be blowing out his coat this time of year. And there's definitely no clumps of fur that can be pulled out of his coat either. Submitted October 24, 2020 at 03:12PM by baconroux https://ift.tt/37RmlKX

[Discussion] What is a weird daily ritual habit your dog does?Dog Talks

I adopted a three year old male Chihuahua Corgi mix in 2015. He is a very mellow dog that sleeps a lot and practically stuck to my hip. If I had to compare him to something else, I would describe as a semi cooked loaf bread (predominately white with brown patches of fur) and sighs a lot. So now its 2020 and the one thing that sticks out is his response to my bathing habits. Ever since I've adopted him, without fail, he would patiently wait behind the door while showering. As soon I finish and step out of the shower soaking wet, I could hear him sigh audibly through the door. As soon as I open the door, he would look up at me expectingly as usual then rush in to lap up the water droplets of my lower leg and just my lower legs. As soon as I finish drying off the spots he missed, then he'll stop. Before anyone asks, he gets plenty of fresh water that get changed out. He doesn't drink from the toilets or from the tub even after a shower. Just likes to lap up the water off my

Obligatory dog tax of course to start (photos of Bear); https://www.instagram.com/p/Bvux5OInMGz/?igshid=v9sg9a3ig8r2 So anyways... My service dog Bear. We had 14 beautiful years together. He was the first Akita I'd ever seen and the first dog I'd ever had (I was warned it was a horrible idea to get an Akita as a first dog at 18 years old, but he was a very spur of the moment rescue). My god was he gorgeous and amazing. I literally stole him from the shitty pet store I worked for add a teen when they were going to stick him in the freezer for only having one testicle descended bc the puppy mill wouldn't take him back and they couldn't sell him. [Discussion] [Vent] Don’t let your tiny “big dog personality” dog into the large dog park ladyDog Talks

The other day, I took my dog to the dog park. He is a quite large Boston terrier mutt, and therefore fits into the “large” side of the dog park. Our park separates the large and small sizes, and it’s worked really well. Keep in mind, I ONLY go to the park when no other dogs are there, because it provides a nice fenced fetching area and has a bench where I can easily read a book while my dog likes to entertain himself. He’s pretty independent so he enjoys the time there to play tug or just to chew on some bones while I supervise him. After about 20 minutes or so, a few more people entered our side. I was getting ready to leave because I don’t stay around when other dogs come, but as I was grabbing my things, I saw someone enter with a tiny odd chihuahua mix on our large side. Immediately, the dog went nuts while running up and snapping at the other dogs. I got out of there as quickly as possible. As I was walking out, I overheard her talking to another member about her dog, saying

[Vent] Stop giving rescue organizations crap about being picky--we are drowningDog Talks

I volunteer for a dog rescue in the Mid-Atlantic--I don't think mentioning names will be beneficial. I check applications, do home visits, casework (the person who works with an approved adopter to help them find the right match), foster, and do follow up work with already adopted dogs. We get so much sh*t every day saying we are being too picky, too slow to approve, not doing enough for the dogs. We have over 100 applicants who have applied in the last 10 days--and that is an improvement from right after the shutdown. We had over one thousand people apply, of those 1000 85% were approved, 9% denied, and 6% were given a list of why they were denied and how to fix it (typically if an animal in the home was overdue on vaccines by less than 3-4 months or if they were not educated of the importance on heartworm preventatives and went and got a heartworm test for their dog and a year's supply of meds we would review and approve) . We have adopted out 100s of dogs over this period.

I could see from the couch out the window the squirrels running around the tree and barely see her head pop into the window frame as she jumps (lol). Some time passes; haven't heard her barking in a bit, asked my fiance to check on her, make sure she's not being naughty. "She's got a squirrel..!" "WHAT? are you sure?!" "Yeah, she's got one...!" He goes outside to tell her to leave it, I peek out the window and there's a squirrel laying on it's back, moving a little bit, no blood anywhere, no signs of any ripping or tearing or any sounds, just a squirrel flopped over, seemingly in shock as she was just nudging it with her mouth (we do not think she had bitten it at all). I am a dog person. My entire life I have grown up around dogs. Throughout my childhood and teenage years we always had at least 2 dogs, most of which were rescues. I have never once in my life met a dog I did not love. After I graduated college I wanted to wait until I had my own house with a yard so that I could adopt a dog a spoil it rotten. Finally the day came about 2 years ago when I could afford a house with a big back yard that I immediately got fenced in for the sole purpose of getting a dog. Around that same time one of the local rescues posted pictures of an adult dog named Gus that checked all of the boxes that I was looking for in a rescue (large, adult, rough life but needed a chance). My wife and I set up a meet and greet and instantly fell in love. Gus had lived a tough life up until he was rescued, he was abused, covered in scars, and drastically underweight. The second he saw us he knew we were there to save him. He came to his forever home and never looked back. For

It's only been 3 weeks since his hospitalization and he's not feeling well again. I have no choice but to do my best to care for him and hope he recovers on his own. I believe he will.. this time. I have a survey that is going to give me the data I need for my research and it would be amazing if as many of you could complete it! It can be done by any age, dog owners or not, it can be done on mobile or laptop. It has a few photos and short clips to watch but should only take 10 or so minutes. I would be super-duper grateful to everyone who could complete this and love you all eternally! My dog's sweet, but when we adopted him, he wasn't trained to do more than sit whenever his leash came out. We love him, but it was incredibly frustrating that he was incredibly aggressive to only my grandmother because of her cane. We'd pretty much given up on training him and he'd become known as the "cute, but dumb" dog among our family, because no treat ever managed to tear his attention away from barking and lunging at the door whenever she came by. It came to the point that my grandmother dreaded coming to our house. This morning he surprised her and she almost fell over, and we began to worry that we would have to give him up for her sake. Yesterday, I happened to give him some Chihuahua cheese and he went CRAZY over it, so this evening I tried distracting him from my grandmother with the cheese, and he actually ignored her for a few moments! I was so surprised that I tried training him again this time with the cheese, and he actually sat multiple time

[Help] – When, if ever, is it OK to leave your dog in the car?Dog Talks

Today was the first time I have ever left my dogs in the car. I was at an estate sale and was loading up two pieces of furniture. It was overcast, 70°F, I had the windows down, parked in the shade on the curb. So I park, go in the house to sign in, and when I walk out to grab a dolly there's a guy passing on the sidewalk, walking his own dog, that loudly yells, "HEY WHO LEFT THEIR DOG IN THE CAR?". I tell him its me, and he lectures me about it is illegal to do that, and that it's going to get to 120 degrees inside of my car. I tell him, "dude, its 70 degrees, I'm gonna load one thing then I'm out of here." He yells back "it doesn't matter, you can't do that its gonna be 120 degrees in your car its illegal" basically in front of an entire audience. She has a toybox where she knows they belong (taught her toys go there), and she will sometimes follow that rule. However, she will often strategically place the toys in hard-to-see places where we commonly walk (e.g., right around a corner or right at the foot of the bed). The reason is thus: When we step on a squeaky toy, it squeaks LOUDLY, (At that point it becomes more of a shrieky toy.) and she immediately comes over superexcited because squeaky toy squeak = play time. It is a clever method she has found to get play at random, unexpected intervals? Waking up? PLAY TIME! Going to the bathroom? PLAY TIME! Walking around while stuck in a 3hr meeting? PLAY TIME! It's a really cute and clever way she has found to control us and get what she wants. Anyone else's dogs do things like this? Submitted October 22, 2020 at 01:29PM by mrgoodshoes https://ift.tt/

[Vent] [Help] My best friend is going blind and I'm so sadDog Talks

My 4.5 year old chocolate lab, Nala, was just diagnosed with primary glaucoma two days ago. It seemed to happen overnight without any warning. I looked down and noticed her eye was cloudy and made an appointment for a few days out. Then, 20 minutes later, I noticed her other eye looked off as well and went in right away. After a long day of tests, she was diagnosed with gluacoma. Since then it already seems like she's lost most of the vision in her right eye. I know that dogs can adapt easier than humans to being blind, and that she will be happy again eventually, but I just feel devastated and can't stop myself from crying. I rescued her as a 5 week old puppy when I was 20 from a horrible breeding situation, I can't be surprised she has this in her genetics. Since then we've moved to several different states together, lived in 5 different homes, been to the mountains, the beach, waterfalls, hiked many places, been to many dog bars, parks, she goes everywhere with me.

[Help] I think a dog on my street is being neglectedDog Talks

I was taking an evening walk and saw a dog looking at me across the street and decided to cross over so I can say hi to him. As I got closer I realized how skinny he was and when he saw me he tried to get up from a sitting position and was having issues getting his back legs to push him up. He was wobbly when he walked, you can see his ribs from the top and sides. It broke my heart. I went back home and grabbed a little bit of kibbel and a chicken treat and gave him some through the gate. He took the chicken treats from me if i directly put it under his nose but didnt touch the kibbel i left on the ground. I emailed animal control with pictures just so they can go check him out. I honestly cant tell if his really old or just neglected, maybe both? I cant stop thinking about him and its breaking my heart... Is there anything else i can do? Here are some pictures https://ibb.co/JmNLdKc https://ibb.co/9cNmbQ4 https://ibb.co/f9Hddhh Edit: Some people mentioned that he just looks

[Fluff] Thankyou to the three young blokes who helped socialize MaxDog Talks

Me and my partner have a rescue who's got some really challenging behaviour around other dogs - we're working hard on socializing him and just getting used to seeing other dogs out and about and not reacting. We have him muzzled just incase we have any other dogs come running up to him, and it's challenging as we want to start getting closer to other dogs without him reacting, but when other people see him with the muzzle they often take a pretty wide path from us. While on our walk today we had three young guys stop us and ask if we were socialising our pup, they took the time to walk their dogs back and forth, slowly getting closer and didn't react or care when ours decided enough was enough and did react (still with the muzzle on) which was super helpful - it helps teach max that he can't just be a bully to get his way that he just has to deal with other dogs. Apart from his one little flare up, it wasn't long before he was sniffing bums and wagging his ta

[discussion] To my pups.Dog Talks

We recently had to surrender our beloved pups, and my mom had portraits done of them- I came home to them. I’m still crying writing this. I miss them so much. I hope your new families love you as much as we do, that they give you Christmas presents, that they have a big yard, take you on long walks, rub Lunas’ ears, and scratch Willows’ back. Please, if they come to be in your family- love them. They deserve it. They were there through cancer, two surgeries, two moves, and tons of dinner scraps. Luna would sleep with me and I still feel alone at night without her there. Goodbye “pup”, and “baby pupper” we still love you. I honestly didn’t know what to tag this- plz don’t attack me, I just wanted to talk about my babies. Submitted October 21, 2020 at 08:25PM by 1357Lindsay https://ift.tt/31MYWXd

[Help] Two year old chihauhau mix mourning loss of her puppiesDog Talks

Hey y’all. My boyfriend and I adopted a sweet little two year old chihauhau mix. She was rescued from an abuse situation and had two sweet little puppies of her own. Her puppies got adopted and she had a hard time adjusting according to the shelter. She was a little mama to all the kittens and other puppies there. We’ve had her for about three months now and she just seems so sad after she sees puppies on our walks. It breaks my heart to see how sad she is after getting to play with other puppies. Would it be wise to adopt another younger dog now? We’ve been debating adding another pup to our family. I’ve never had more than one dog at a time though. Any tips for bringing a new puppy home? Any age recommendations? Submitted October 22, 2020 at 02:57AM by cosmicorpse https://ift.tt/2IUziJn

[Help] Our two dogs ate half a squirrel while I was on a phone interview, what to do now?Dog Talks

As the title states, I had the dogs outside while I was on a phone interview. I went to let them in, and saw one of my girls laying with half a dead squirrel between her paws. It looked very fresh, like she had just finished killing it. I don't know if my other dog joined in on the fun. I called my vet and described this to her, and she said that there isn't much to worry about besides a little diarrhea. Should I be concerned with fleas or worms or bacteria or anything? I have the dogs closed in a bathroom right now, as I wasn't sure if they can spread any bacteria that might be in their mouths. They are up to date on all shots, including rabies. Not sure if I need to do anything besides getting rid of the half of a squirrel on our patio. Submitted October 21, 2020 at 09:23PM by lanaabananaa https://ift.tt/3of8pA1

[Help] Do the heath screening from DNA sites count as preexisting conditions for insurance?Dog Talks

I was throwing around the idea of getting a DNA test on our mix for fun and saw the options for health screening. Would getting a health screening potentially show a preexisting condition as far as the insurance is concerned? I have heard of insurance companies knowing about vet visits the dog did with previous owners, so not sure if the DNA places share information. [Fluff]Dog Talks

So I decided to move to FL and as a present my dad took me to get a chihuahua....let me tell you I never realized how much getting a dog would change my life for the better. This pup reminds me to be on my shit, so I can be the best lil mama to her when she needs me. She makes me happy, not like a smile...but like double chin cheesin’ happy. She can bark, whine, cry whatever she always makes me the happiest human. I thought the worst part of getting a dog would be the responsibility or having to clean up her poop but man was I wrong....the bad part is that I know she won’t be in my life forever. Getting a dog changed my life for the absolute best I never believed in love until I got my little one and if anyone is ever on the fence, just do it. I can’t believe I even had a life without her in it at one point. Just have to say thank you to life for blessing me with such a great one, brings tears to my eyes to know she’s even half as happy as she makes me. Submitted October 22, 2020

[Discussion] Vet went from "sometimes dogs have IBS and it's just something they have to live with" to "We need to admit him for an emergency surgery to relax his bowels, btw, that can happen if you don't manage the condition properly"Dog Talks

Of course, I've figured out how to manage it on my own over the last year. I know what he can and cannot eat. I know how much food is too much. All through trial and error because the vets said it's just a thing. But he got into something, probably when my toddler nieces were snacking, and it made him sick. Really sick. He completely passed out, and no amount of shaking, slapping, or screaming at him would wake him up for a solid two minutes. We rushed him to the ER and the emergency vet happened to be the one who said it's no biggie that he gets chronic diarrhea. Now my pup is hooked up to fluids and can't come home until his intestine goes normal again. If it doesn't, he will be admitted into surgery. Now the vet is making plans to get him some special ingredient food and do a lot of testing, all the fun stuff I tried to get them to do in the first place. Sad that we had to get to this point first. Submitted October 21, 2020 at 05:14PM by CollieflowersBark ht

[Fluff] I literally just complimented Chester on his poop!Dog Talks

We're not sure why but our boi Chester aka Chettar aka Mad Cheddar had about two days of loose-ish stools. Nothing too scary but a few at 6 on the fecal scale. No 7s but def close. Our vet said to keep an eye on it for another day or two and we'd make the call then. His poops yesterday looked much better and this morning on his walk he pooped and it looked perfect. I was so relieved all I could do was go, "What a good pooper! Sooooo good at pooping!" and text my SO 🐕💩👍Lol Submitted October 21, 2020 at 07:12PM by CALMD0WNC0URTNEY https://ift.tt/35lKruf

[Help] Looking for something similar to high-value BarkBox pork treatsDog Talks

My dog (1 year, 65 lb. shepherd mix) is not particularly food motivated and finding high value treats he really enjoys that can reliably capture his attention has been difficult. We recently got our BarkBox for the month that came with some “Haunted Ham” pea-sized pork treats. He’s been going through these like crazy and looks to us for them on walks like nothing we’ve tried so far. Here are pictures of the package with ingredients on the back. I know they are available through BarkShop, but I was hoping to find something similar that is more widely available since I’m not sure how seasonal these are. Does anyone have suggestions to any treats that may be worth trying that would hopefully get the same response and be similarly high valued to him?
