[help] my dog is allergic to everything, and we’re about to move.Dog Talks
hi everyone. so I’m going to try to make this as short and sweet as possible. My partner and I have had Meatloaf, a 3 year old Dalmatian/sharpei mix since she was just a few weeks old. She’s spayed.
She’s always had a lot of health issues, but we’ve kept them under control thus far. She’s allergic to a lot of local pollens, a bunch of trees and grass you can’t find in the city, certain meats, soy, wheat, and dust etc. she has a ton of allergies.
My partner and I are both students, and we don’t have a lot of money. We’re actually pretty broke. We’ve had a savings account for meatloaf specifically so we can always take care of her, but it ran out because of how much we’ve had to take her to the vet. We work so we can take her to the vet still and care for her, but it’s definitely a tight struggle.
Now, we live in a CITY where there’s hardly anything going on here and she’s biting, scratching, and licking herself constantly. She always has red spots everywhere and she’s always in a cone and on antibiotics and has a special shampoo we bathe her with. Next year, my partner and I got into the school of our dreams :) it’s upstate and surrounded by nature and greenery.
In retrospect, meatloaf, as a very active and fun young pup, would LOVE to frolic in nature. We were so excited thinking about how her anxiety would ease up in such a quiet, open area compared to the loud and dirty city. But then we remembered her allergies, and now we’re stuck. Meatloaf is the love of my life so rehoming her is NOT an option.
I’d rather not go to the school and settle for something else then rehome her. But I know I shouldn’t do that either. So I want to find a way for this to work.
The vet told us about allergy desensitization but they’re $350 each round and I think she said we need 7-8 rounds of them? And i wasn’t clear on if it’s once for the rest of her life or if it’s every year because we cannot afford either, but we DEFINITELY can not afford every year.
Does anyone know anything about desensitization? any cheaper alternatives? Anything that can work?
Is it possible to move my already allergic dog from the city to a place filled with her allergens? If we do something for her allergies?
