Malinois puppy working dog. What we do with our pups that show any promise as a potential candidate for protection or security work, is start them on a training programme tailored to their individual strengths. For different dogs this could mean a totally unique regime from their brothers or sisters. It does not take too long to bring them all under the same plan, but for those first few weeks we cater for their individuality.

Caution when adopting dogs from a Rescue centre.

Rescue Centre Adoption Dogs. This may be seen as controversial but when thinking about adopting your next dog from the Rescue centre how many people actually take the time to understand why the dog is there in the first place. I am going on experience here as I used to do one - one  house visits, training dogs with ' behavioral ' issues. Now I also understand that not all dogs are the same and that a lot of dogs have successfully been rehomed and the Rescue centres really try to do their best,  but I can hand on heart say that 85- 95% of my client's were having issues with newly rescued/adopted/rehomed dogs...just take a moment...to digest that information...85-90%, ok some were new owners, first time dog people and some of the dogs were puppies, but in the main, the rest were adults. When I asked if the dogs came with any information about previous life experiences the answer was invariably 'no' but the staff at the centre says he/she was lovely and great with ot

What are Detection Dogs trained on?

What are  Detection Dogs trained on? So when we see videos of wonderful dogs sniffing out items hidden on baddies or stashed away in hidden corners of buildings or under car wheel arches, it is the result of many weeks and in some cases months of teaching the dog to find, a, drugs b, money c, explosives d, guns and in fact a dog can be taught to search out, using its nose, anything that has a scent, which, basically is everything, even if we mere humans can not smell it. The question then is what and how. Firstly, the 'WHAT' Many years ago when I first became involved with helping to train detection dogs it was indeed as Drugs detection dogs where we were asked to provide both Passive and Pro-Active dogs for different tasks. Passive- is where the dog will detect a smell that is targeted, as people walk past or the dog walks past, usually on a leash and either/or stand still/sit/lie down, indicating to the handler a find. Pro-Active- is where the dog will activ

are malinois smart Belgian Shepherd Malinois - Awesome dog are malinois smart  When asked this question I often have to stifle a chuckle, I know I shouldn't but I often do, why? well because I know from that initial question I have to seriously judge the person asking it. The Belgian Malinois is one of the most intelligent dog breeds there is. Look around at who has them!...I mean... take a look!... Just about every law enforcement agency in the world for a start, now would they be using a dog breed that wasn't intelligent? But in all honesty I would suggest that the Malinois was perhaps not the best dog breed for them to look at owning and that more research was needed on their part.  What breed of dog would you recommend for Protection or Security work? is another often asked question, my answer is usually... If you wanted something a little more 'Hardcore' and genetically sound than the old favourite the German Shepherd, then I could not recommend t
