[fluff] stuffed toyDog Talks

I nearly lost it today. Daisy has taken sweet to a new level. My daughters were playing with their stuffed animals in the living room and Daisy was upstairs with me. When we went downstairs she saw them and went to the office to get her stuffed toy. Next thing we know she is trotting happily into the living room to play with my daughters. I love this dog! [Discussion] my dog passed away suddenly tonight. I’m shattered.Dog Talks

Took my dog out for a walk as trick or treating was ending. She spotted another dog and started barking then immediately collapsed on her side. She was gone within 10 seconds. We’ve had Sasha for 9 years and got her from a rescue after she had been abused. She was the greatest dog in the world and truly like my child. Burying her was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. How do you cope when you lose a beloved pet? Submitted November 01, 2020 at 03:29AM by ryanellison1983 https://ift.tt/2HKt26V

[vent] don’t leave your dog to die aloneDog Talks

I work at a vet clinic and I’m sick of people dropping their dogs off to be euthanized. It might be hard to say goodbye but it’s hell for them. They already don’t like the vet, they’re confused, they’re scared, they’re sad and they’re looking for YOU when they take their last breath. I can try to provide them as much love and comfort as I humanly can but at the end of the day I’m a stranger to them. Today a lady dropped off her 13 year old dog to be put to sleep after I told her we didn’t have a vet in clinic as she was on farm calls all day, she insisted on leaving her there at 9am, knowing that our vet wouldn’t be back until well after 6pm. She was too busy to bring her back later, so she left her sweet girl to be alone all day before dying. I kept her with me for most of the day, took her for a small walk, bought her a cheeseburger and donut on my lunch and laid on the ground and cuddled her while she cried, scared and confused. I kissed her and told her she was a good girl while s...

[Discussion] Don't want to leave my dogDog Talks

Hi! This is more of a vent/offmychest but comments are welcome. TL;DR: I want to move out but I don't want to leave my dog and even if she stays with me part-time I'm afraid it wil negatively impact her. So a live with my dad and 5 years ago he starting wanting a dog. I always wanted a dog but I never pushed for it because I would move out anyway. So we got a dog but we agreed it would mostly be my dad's dog. However, I changed my study and went to a college that is really nearby so I stayed at home and I fell completely in love with my dog. She kind of became my dog, but not really. I just spend most time with her and walk her most of the time and take her to the vet etc. However, I'm now 24 and almost done with college and I want to move out but I don't want to leave my dog and I'm worrying about this daily now. I am planning to live in a place that has enough room so my dog can stay with me at least part time when my dad is working (if everything goes we...

[HELP] Does anyone have recommendations for really warm dog clothes and/or a heated dog bed?Dog Talks

I have a tiny girl that freezes all winter. My house is currently 69 degrees and she has a jacket on and she is still shivering. I spend all fall, winter, and spring every year following her around and covering her up with blankets. She does like the heating pads but they just get too warm overall. I have found the heavy coats but she needs something she can wear inside that is comfortable to sleep in, too. She is a 7lb unknown mixture but the rescue suspected Chihuahua and Boston Terrier from the looks of her mother and my girl has weird wavy hair so the dad is some variety of low shedder like a poodle. She is thin (healthy thin, not sickly thin) and a picky eater so she doesn't even have a little bit of fat to insulate her. [Discussion] My dogs have been battling a severe ringworm infection for the last 13 months. How common are severe fungus infections in dogs?Dog Talks

My dogs both have ringworm and have been on a strict quarantine since September 15th, 2019 My more sensitive dog was misdiagnosed for over a year with a non-contagious yeast infection in November 2018. Somewhere within the next twelve months my dog developed a ringworm infection, that skyrocketed to enormous proportions. By September 2019 when my vet finally realized it was a more severe fungus infection, my sensitive dog had lesions covering over 60% of his body. By the time the vet realized it was contagious, my sick dog had already spread it to his twin brother. Both my dogs are 95 pounds, double coated, long haired Labrador/chow chow mixes. They just turned 8 years old this April, 2020. We have ran multiple tests, and even though the growths look like ringworm and behave like a fungus, we have not been unable to get a positive ringworm result from any of my dogs’ biopsies. The vet immediately put both dogs on steroids, antibacterial for the secondary infections, and anti-fungal...

[Vent] My dog has early kidney failureDog Talks

The veterinarian diagnosed my dog with Stage 1 kidney failure. I know he's getting old now but it's just so hard to hear because well he's my dog. He's so energetic and spry for 8 years old but the vet telling me he's sick is so devestating. He doesn't look sick. I wish the vet was lying but that's just me avoiding the issue. I'm slowly accepting that my dog has this illness but at least it's treatable with medicine. I don't like this feeling this way. I don't want him to leave me but that's what all dog owners have to go through eventually. Tears and all, I'm going to love him til the bittersweet end. I hate 2020. [Breed] First dog as an adult in an apartmentDog Talks

I've been wanting to get a dog for a long time since I left my family home, but only just now have really had the financial/lifestyle freedom to do it. I thought about waiting until I moved to a slightly larger unit, but since realizing this is the only time in my life I can guarantee I'd be at home nearly 24/7 to take care of a puppy properly, I want to start on the process sooner than later. So more or less I'm looking for recommendations as to what kind of breeds/other ideas I should look into. Introduction 1) Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs? Yes*, my family had a Chow-mix growing up, and then some poodle-terrier mutt blob, but I was not really involved in any part of their care. I did volunteer at a local animal rescue for several years and through that have learned much of the behavioral training basics for things like biting/jumping/etc, but minimal experience in tricks or command based training. Other pet exp...

[Help] - My little rescue dog is thriving.Dog Talks

I adopted a little dog of ambiguous breeding in January. Rigoberto was from a hoarding situation where roughly half of the dogs had to be euthanized. For months, I wondered if he’d ever do anything besides hide in the corner and flinch when he heard a sound. But the last month has been miraculous. He’s become affectionate with me and my friends, and even more recently he’s begun to play with me. The problem is that when he plays with me he nips— and it can really be kind of painful. I don’t want this to become a habit, but the look of joy on his face when he does it is indescribably satisfying, and I fear that if I were to use even a stern voice to correct him he would revert to his quivering mess he was before. I’ve tried praising him when he plays nicely, but then he becomes excited and nips again. Any advice from someone who’s been there? [RIP] Blue, Mixed Breed, 5Dog Talks

I haven't used reddit in quite some time and I'm not quite sure why I'm writing this but my wife and I are having a very hard time dealing with the loss of our wonderful dog, his name was Blue. Blue was more than just our companion, he was our best friend and we did just about everything with him. Blue was a mixed breed dog of unknown genetics, he was the kindest little soul I've ever known. Blue loved everything good in life: food, people, the outdoors, a warm fire and his dog beds. His favorite thing in the world was hiking, whenever we would pull the car up to a trailhead he would leap to the window and cry until we were outside on the trail together. He loved to play in the snow on the sand and in shallow water. He loved playing fetch with his Chuckit and chasing squirrels. He loved to sit on the couch and curl up with whomever would welcome his presence. Blue came into our lives at four months of age when we spent two weeks with a friend of mine that had adopted...

[VENT] Faking a service animal should be legally punished.Dog Talks

I am so sick and tired of these misbehaving, aggressive, unsocialized dangerous dogs getting away with literally whatever they want because their jerk of an owner bought a 25$ red vest off of Amazon. No, your dog isn't a service dog because you put a vest on it. No, your dog isn't a service dog because you put a patch on it. No, your dog isn't a service dog because you have anxiety. In my townhouse complex we have rules against out of control dogs. Just tonight an enormous golden was dragging his owner to me and my dog and boyfriend snarling and barking. We were literally standing there while my dog was peeing. I told the guy my dog will attack his if he comes any closer. I'm sick of dealing with this. I'm sick of being harassed by fake service dogs in public. I'm sick of REAL service dogs and their owners being harassed because people are faking them. I have a very reactive dog and all of these dogs coming at him aggressively is preventing us from moving for...

Owners that let their dogs run to other dogs or people - please read [vent]Dog Talks

Please please please read if you have a dog that runs towards other dogs or people when off the lead and doesn't come back when called. You might think your dog is safe, just excited to see new dogs or new people or just generally curious but if your dog doesn't come back when called in this situation, you need to change your ways. Other dogs may not respond well, for many reasons, they could be scared, feel threatened or even get annoyed so they might attack. This puts both dogs at risk of injury or even death. If a human is approached by a strange dog, children could lash out due to fear, someone may have an allergy so could have a reaction, others may have a phobia or strong fear to dogs and may panic, shout, push the dog away etc, causing the dog to then feel worse and again, could result in an attack so the dog or person could get hurt. You need to control your dog around people or other dogs and if you can't do it off the lead, then the dog should stay ON a lead ...

[Discussion] I have never realised how important a good bed for my dog isDog Talks

I've a large collie/lab mix and when she was a puppy she would eat anything she saw, so we got cheapish beds for her. We got her cheap beds for years and years. Recently now we bought her a brand new bed with a memory foam base to it and she seems so much more energetic and happy now. As much as I realise shes a dog and she doesnt mind lying on the floor or mats I never stopped to think that her should have one good comfy spot for her If you're the same as me and your dog doesn't chew everything up I really recommend putting a small bit more money into a good bed My question is for the discussion; to anyone else who at some point upgraded their bed, do you recommend it/think it made a difference or does your dog seems just as happy Submitted October 30, 2020 at 08:34PM by probablyupamountain https://ift.tt/2HTzJDr

[Discussion] My thanks to whomever suggested clipping one nail a day in exchange for a special treat at the same significant time of the day, every day... that was a brilliant tip, highly recommend.Dog Talks

Our pup wasn't afraid of the nail clippers, but she surely didn't like to have her nails done either, and so they tended get left longer than ideal. We did have "wait" (to get the treat from where I left it until after the trick) and "shake" already trained, so this method wasn't a huge leap for us. It's only been a few weeks, but she already knows whats up when I get treat from that particular jar after a walk, and she'll be sitting in the living room waving her "shake" paw at me before I can get there. I usually have to ask for a different paw, because that paw always has every nail well trimmed, but that's fine. The back paws are a bit awkward, but we manage. Sometimes I have to look at couple paws to find a nail worth trimming at all, and it's usually just a little nibble of a clip now. She waits patiently for the sound of the clip, then dives for her treat. I suppose ideally I could have her wait, maybe try to do a seco...

[VENT] Do not get mad at me because your dogs and/or your neighbor’s dogs are barking at my dogs when I walk them silently in the proximity of your house.Dog Talks

I actually had someone yell at me and tell me to leave a public grassy space that I was playing with my dogs on because other dogs nearby were barking. Both me and my dogs were very quiet and respectful of the neighbors and the space we were only goin to be there for 20-25 minutes max. About 10 minutes in this guy starts yelling that it’s time for me to leave. Seriously, my dogs are not perfect all the time and bark sometimes when people walk by. I tell my dogs “NO” and shape the behavior. If they really won’t stop I’ll close the window. The point is you are in control of your dogs, especially in your house. You do not control public spaces or the behavior of anyone else or their dogs. If you really have an issue hearing your dog bark at passerby’s you need to look up a good trainer. [Vent] If your dog is matted, stop complaining and leaving bad reviews on your Groomer’s page when they shave your dog!Dog Talks

I can’t believe this is such an issue right now. My dog’s groomer is excellent. Almost every single review that’s bad (I’m talking 90%), is because she shaved a dog that was matted, and the owner didn’t like the look. If you get a dog with a high maintenance coat, you have to take care of that coat if you want to maintain it! Never mind that a matted coat could seriously hurt your dog. It can cause sores, cut off airflow to certain areas, and even cause hematomas and cut off blood circulation in severe cases. The groomer shaved the dog because the matted fur could and possibly already did hurt the dog! I can’t believe people don’t understand that. [Fluff]My dogs aren’t excited to see meDog Talks

I’ve had two dogs over the last fifteen years. They’ve both been my dogs, but neither of them preferred me. My Chihuahua, Millie(RIP) was always more excited to see my mom, and wasn’t bothered at all if I wasn’t around. My current dog, Daisy, prefers my husband. When he comes home she dances around him and wants to be picked up, while I barely get a tail wag. That being said, without fail, if they feel unwell or need something, I have always been the go to person. Millie was a sickly dog and in the last year of her life had two emergency vet visits. Both times, the first clue that something was wrong was her actively seeking me out and asking to come in my room the night before she started showing symptoms (she always slept with my mom). At the time, I thought it was just a coincidence, but looking back I truly believe it was intentional. She didn’t feel right, and she knew that any time she didn’t feel good in the past I was the one who was there to give her what she needed to feel ...

[vent] stop telling me my dog’s nails are too long! I’m aware!Dog Talks

It happens almost every time I post a picture of her. I get it. Her nails are too long. I KNOW they’re too long. You can’t just cut a dog’s nails in half to shorten them. It’s a very gradual process. You should’ve seen them four months ago. I literally file her nails every single day . They were overgrown when I got her. It can take up to a year to get a dog’s nails back to being short. My dog has a long, thick quick that is almost impossible to see through her nails. It would hurt her to shorten them faster. I want to share photos of my dog without worrying about being shamed every goddamn time. Thank you for listening. Submitted October 30, 2020 at 08:05AM by barbarosabee https://ift.tt/3jI3DYb

[HELP] Suddenly realized I never get to see or pet or be with my dog anymore and it's making it hard to do anything.Dog Talks

It dawned on me a couple of nights ago that I will never get to see, or feel, or comfort my dog anymore since he drowned this past summer and i can't shake the thought. It's killing me. He was 19, had grown up with me. Was my shadow and couldn't go without being physically against me. The only thing I want in life is to get him back and the realization that it won't happen is making it difficult to want to carry on. My parents got a new puppy and when I go over there he's all cute and gets really excited for my attention...but then I get sad and can't do it. “[Discussion] How do you feel when children “bark” at your dogs?”Dog Talks

Curious question, I’m sitting here on my balcony and there’s a play set across from my balcony in my apartments. My dogs and I are sitting out here just relaxing, and I have these two probably 6-8 aged boys barking at my dogs. I sometimes find it very annoying and rude that their parents don’t teach their kids to respect animals, then sometimes I find it okay that they are curious. But how do you feel? [HELP] My dog (11yo) will have a surgeryDog Talks

Hi y'all! I noticed some bumps in my dog's stomach and I took her to the vet. It's not cancer, but it's better to remove them. What can I do for my dog after surgery? I can bath her? She can eat the same as usual or only some specific kind of food? She'll have a mastectomy surgery on two of her inguinal breasts, and I can't make an appointment with the vet before surgery because of covid, and I have a lot of questions. Also, she has a perineal hernia, which I talked to the vet about too, and he said it's not necessary to take her to surgery atm. But I don't know if there's some kind of exercicies that she cannot do, or food she cannot eat? Submitted October 29, 2020 at 09:36AM by Gin_jdr https://ift.tt/2JbrB1o

[HELP] How do you know it's the right time to put your best buddy to sleep for good?Dog Talks

My basset has a noncancerous mouth tumor that is very aggressive. We had it removed a couple months ago, but they told us it's connected to his jaw bone and would grow back. Well, it came back as soon as his mouth was healed. It hurts him. I accidentally kicked him about a week ago coming in the front door and it bled everywhere. His bottom front teeth have all fallen out and it just keeps getting bigger. Took him back to a different vet today and got the news we knew we'd get. We can either get half of his jaw removed or have him put to sleep. If we go with the surgery, his tongue will hang out, he'll have constant dry mouth, his drool will be uncontrollable and there's a chance he will stop eating and starve. He was at a local Petsmart adoption event with his brother. My brother in law adopted one and I decided I wanted the other, but wasn't able to go right away. Went later that day and they said they had to take him back to the shelter because he wouldn'...

[VENT] I’m so worried about the rest of my dog’s lifeDog Talks

CW: suggestion of animal abuse, suicide My Hank, my best friend and closest pal, is turning 9 next month. He’s a chow/Akita/Rottweiler mix and is the best dog I’ve ever had. He was also me and my dad’s dog. I brought Hank home after offering to dogsit him for a friend who was moving. I realised the (now ex) friend was a very bad owner to Hank so I just kind of.....kept him. My dad said absolutely no more dogs (as dads do) but he fell in love with Hank and they became best buddies until earlier this year. My dad died by suicide after living alone with just Hank for years (I moved out shortly after we got Hank and lived all over, usually very far from dad). I fully believe Hank kept my dad going for as long as he could. I also know that Hank has helped me grieve the loss of my father. After all, we did both lose our dad. Since March, Hank has joined me and moved all over the world traveling on trains, transatlantic planes, and cross-American automobiles. He is my best friend, my side...

[Discussion] Under what circumstances would you willingly give away your dog?Dog Talks

Context: my wife and I drove from Los Angeles to Vancouver, BC two months ago with our wheaten terrier mix. Her parents had an empty basement unit that they offered to let us stay. Turns out our boy LOVES this climate (not surprising considering his breed) and is thriving in a city where there are amazing hikes, walks and parks in literally every direction. My in-laws never had a pet and are absolutely smitten with him - he has bonded with them as well. This is our dilemma: though Muppet loves us (we rescued him 4 years ago), we suspect he might be better off here. It makes me so, so sad to take him back to a city and a climate that he doesn’t enjoy nearly as much. Reasons to leave him here: According to his fitness tracker, he happily walks over six miles a day right now. In LA he barely walked 1 before protesting. He is healthier and more active as my FIL wakes up early to walk him and takes him to the nature trail in the evening. He absolutely loves this cold weather, hate...

[HELP] How to cheer up a dog that lost her owner?Dog Talks

My Grandpa died and he had a little dog and she has been so sad lately. She just sleeps all day and doesn't even ask to go potty anymore, I just have to take her every few hours. She also seems to keep having bad dreams. I feel so bad, is there anything I can do for her to help? Submitted October 29, 2020 at 04:25AM by Shakybunny https://ift.tt/31Rgm4R

[HELP] Advice for the care of a frail 14yo chihuahua.Dog Talks

Rescued from craigslist after the ad broke our hearts. Previous owners say he's been living in the garage for a couple years to separate him from their children who pestered him too much. After a vet appointment it was recommended to have his remaining teeth removed but thankfully there's no heartworms or parasites to worry about. He still walks around but hardly has an appetite. Not sure if it's just depression from being put in a new environment with total strangers. Though we may see an improvement once his painful teeth are gone. I'm open to any advice from people who've nursed an old dog till the end of their life. How can I make sure he's as comfortable as possible? For now we have soft food available to him 24/7, we also water it down to make sure he's getting enough fluids. He doesn't seem interested in eating or drinking at the moment. We're going to get him a sweater since he's a shiverer. That's all I can think of for the mome...

[Discussion] Water fountain hackDog Talks

(I thought this up myself and I'm very proud of my very modest accomplishment that probably isn't as original as I think. Please play along, thx. ;-) I wanted to get a water fountain for my dog to drink from, since she kept trying to drink from the one I got for the cats. But my dog is very large and has a very large head, and the extra-large stainless steel pet fountains are kind of expensive and the pump part seems to take up most of the space in the bowl. I bought an aquarium pump for $20, got a big metal pot out of the cupboard, filled the pot with water and dropped in the pump. Boom! Big fancy pet fountain for 20 bucks. Every 2 or 3 days I take the pump out and wash it off, and put the pot in the dishwasher and fill up a different pot. So easy and the dog loves it. [Fluff] Thank you, Red-Shouldered Hawk, that was so very kind of you.Dog Talks

My 1-year-old IG mix LOVES those plush toys that look like animal pelts. Apparently, a local Red-Shouldered Hawk does, too. And now my dog's rabbit plush is 20ft up a tree in our backyard. Submitted October 28, 2020 at 09:12PM by Arztwolf https://ift.tt/2TvxOY9

[discussion] Explaining reputable dog breeding to the average dog owner?Dog Talks

It seems like this discussion only gets talked about amongst dog enthusiasts, and only certain dog enthusiasts (such as this very sub). From what I've seen, many American dog owners have something against purebred dogs, outside of working dogs. The AKC is an outdated enemy who just breeds dogs to arbitrary standards that leave them sick. The little lady next door who breeds dogs isn't a backyard breeder or puppy mill because her dogs are treated like family. You just need to take your dogs to the vet before breeding them... The average Joe doesn't wanna hear wordy explanations about OFA or here that their cousin is a backyard breeder for breeding mini bullies or maltipoos. You probably just come off as obnoxious to them. So, how do we educate people about these sorts of things? Everything is just as simple as "Adopt, don't shop". I've thought of becoming a Dogtuber some day (partially to just shill about how small breeds and standard poodles aren...
