Menna's arrival at Little Glebe Acres

[help] my 1.5 year puppy husky was hit by a car today https://ift.tt/eA8V8J She’s hospitalized right now with a completely fractured leg and something about air outside her lung. I’m just wondering... if anyone with any experience relating to either of the two, is it possible she can make a full recovery or will there be any kind of long term permanent damage, like pain while running/walking. I mean long term, because I know at first it won’t be easy for her dogs

[discussion] Do you think people shouldn’t be allowed to have dogs if they can barely pay for more important things that need to be taken care of first? https://ift.tt/eA8V8J Like I feel like it’s animal abuse. I know someone who is like this and they don’t ever take the two dogs they have now to get groomed maybe only once a year and also one of the dogs has horrid breath because one of their teeth is rotten and they won’t do anything about it. And now they are wanting to foster 2 more puppies and I’m pretty sure you can only have 3 dogs per household fostering or not where we live. I feel like the shouldn’t be allowed when they can barely get money to take care of themselves let alone have pets. It’s just annoying! Anyone else agree? dogs

[Discussion] Found a product that cured my dogs dry nose/hyperkeratosis https://ift.tt/eA8V8J My dog had hyperkeratosis on the side of her nose for as long as I can remember. I tried a stick balm but she went nuts trying to wipe it off I think due to the scent. I got this organic product from amazon with no scent and I was shockingly surprised how quick and well it worked. For the first few days when I would rub it on she would lick it right off. That wasnt ideal but I was still seeing improvement. I changed to putting it on right before she ate and that did the trick. 5-6 days later it was completely cleared. She didnt have any reactions or tummy issues due to eating it. Its been a huge success and im just so happy with the results i thought id share. I know pugs and other breeds are susceptible to this issue my so i thought id share. I got it on Amazon. The name of the company is Over the Moon Pets and its Organic Dog Nose Balm. Im not affiliated with the company in any way. Just thought id share a good experience after a few bad ones with popular balm brands. dogs

[help] my dog passed away yesterday. A friend just offer me a puppy. Should I take it? https://ift.tt/eA8V8J My dog Pip passed away yesterday. I had a rough night. A friend heard that my dog passed away and she has 7 German Shepard/Blue Heeler mix puppies and she offered us one when they are old enough to be homed. They do sound like a nice mix. I feel torn however, I loved my dog as much as humanly possible, but I have a dog shaped hole in my life now. I don't want to be disrespectful to Pip and "replace" him, he could never be replaced, he was 1 in a million but my life isn't complete without him. What should I do? How long should I wait before I'm ready to get another dog? My kids want me to get the dog, they're hurting just as much as I am. Pip was my first dog and I so fell in love with him. Im 47 btw, Pip was only 8 when he passed away. I never realized the impact a dog could have on someone's life, and how empty your life feels without that dog. I don't want to make a rushed decision, but what else can fill a dog shaped hole in someone's life but another dog? What should i do? What would you do? dogs

[DISCUSSION] Realities of raising a dog as a single dog mom/ dad https://ift.tt/eA8V8J I want to make sure I make the right decision for the dog I bring home. Pros and cons of becoming a single dog mom. The pros are easy, I want to hear from you about the cons. What are the difficulties you face as a single dog parent? If you fall sick, how do you manage? What is the average monthly cost of owning a pet dog in Chicago? Little about me: Single 28 yo living in a 450sq ft studio apartment (with access to a private and public doggie park). I currently have a full time job that takes up 8-10h of my day. My company has a flexible work from home policy in general, it might be even more flexible post COVID19 situation. dogs

[HELP] Help my dog deal with me moving away temporarily https://ift.tt/eA8V8J I have a 1 year old cockapoo who is my shadow. We do everything together. I live at home with my parents and siblings, and my dog loves all of them, but he and I have a much stronger bond than anyone else. At the end of this year I’m going to have to move out for about 6 months for work, and I can’t bring my dog with me. I’m worried he’s going to struggle to cope since he already has separation issues, especially with me. Of course he’ll be well looked after and be with people he loves, but I just worry that initially he won’t know what to do since we do everything together, he even sleeps in my bedroom. Because of covid we haven’t been able to practice me going to sleep over somewhere else, so not sure how he’ll deal with bedtimes etc. Anyone have any tips for things we can start now/closer to the time for him to cope better? I’ve heard horror stories of dogs becoming sick and worse when their owner leaves and I’m worrying for him. dogs

[Help] my dog Pip has been having problems with his digestive system. He had difficulty going poo on his own. This morning he has a prolapsed colon. The vet is trying to get his colon inside his body where it belongs but he doesn't think it will be successful and if he fails they will euthanize him. https://ift.tt/eA8V8J Pip is only 8. He is my first dog and I have been mentally preparing for his death since he got sick in January. I already said my good-byes to him. I dont want to lose him. He is in the vets, and God's hands right now. If anyone knows anything about dealing with a dog with a prolapsed colon now is the time to share, in an hour I may not have him anymore. I love you Pip!! dogs

[DISCUSSION] Your favorite breed and why? https://ift.tt/eA8V8J No, I am not trying to start a war. As a general dog lover, what is your all time favorite breed and why, from your experience or the breeds general reputation. I've never even owned a Golden but I LOVE LOVE LOVE Golden Retrievers. Adorable, friendly, lovely breed. I also have a huge soft spot for Collies, German Shepherds, Labradors and Bernese Mountain Dogs, Irish Water Spaniels and Irish Wolfhounds. dogs

[Help] My dog pees whenever on of my three male housemates come home. Never with me (f) https://ift.tt/eA8V8J [help] This has only happened since one of my housemates came home for college after being away all summer. I know the routine has changed with us in college but her behaviour is now weird/changed around all the guys, even my bf (third housemate). Whenever they come home, she runs up to them really exited, and then just changes to looking really nervous (head and body low, tail tucked) and pees, quite an amount. None of them are aggressive with her when and before this happens, they're actually quite polite because she's not really their dog, they just tell her 'down' when she inevitably jumps up, which she is getting better with as she matures. I do the exact same, though sometimes I can be more assertive with her when she gets overly exited with me, as I'm the main owner and her favourite. And even so, has never peed with me or looked nervous in this scenario. Only if she's in trouble, and will sometimes dribble, but not the amount that's happening here. I'm concerned now and quite worried. She loves the guys, and I don't know where this quick transition from excitement to submission/nervousness comes from, with only them.. dogs

[vent] LEASH YOUR AGGRESSIVE DOG WTF https://ift.tt/eA8V8J Ok so I was at a beach (don't know if I'd call it that, it's more of a little patch of sand that shows up for a few hours a day behind my building) And this guy was there with two dogs, they were playing fetch, ok, that's fine. But I wanted to go home without having to wait for my dog to play or say hi, so I leashed him and started crossing the beach When out of no where the big dog starts running in my dog's direction growling and foaming and barking and tries to attack him! He avoided the first try and for the second I got in-between them and kicked he other dogs head and it ran away. It didn't help or anything so it wasn't a bad hit. Just enough to stop them. Still they started circling around to get at my dog AGAIN. The owner came gold his dog and know what he said???? "Oh sorry, MY DOG DOESN'T LIKE WHEN OTHER DOGS ARE LEASHED" ????????? THEN DONT FUCKING HAVE IT LOOSE ON A PLACE WHERE YOURE MOST LIKELY TO ENCOUNTER DOGS ON LEASH???? what kind of fucked up excuse is that??? If you KNOW your dog attacks leashed dogs while lose.... don't let him lose???? Wtf is wrong with people???? dogs

[Help] Red flag from breeder or just them being responsible? https://ift.tt/eA8V8J I messaged a corgi breeder asking if I could visit their home where they breed the pups and they said they don’t allow visitors. Full context: Hi, To answer your question about coming to see us: Because we have pregnant females here, and then infant and baby corgis who have not been vaccinated, we cannot allow visitors, just as necessary health precautions. We limit visitors just to the new parents when they come to pick up their vaccinated 8 week old puppies. Even then, we have to quarantine everyone else for the visits.:0) That being said, we do, of course, show photos to the adoptive families whose names have come up on the waiting list, and as much as possible, allow them to choose from several puppies. If their ideal color or sex is not available, they can always choose to wait for another litter, too. It is always my goal for each family to get the puppy of their dreams! Another thing I do is that once you have chosen your puppy, I send you photos every few days so you can watch it grow. I am the only breeder I know who does this, but I think it is important for bonding. :0) Our waiting list is out to next Spring, now. Companion corgis with regular coats are $1700 or $2350 for a fluffy. If you are interested in getting on the list, please fill out the application on the website. Do you guys think this sounds shady or is it normal? dogs

[Help] Full time muzzling options https://ift.tt/eA8V8J We have an older large dog (10 yo, we have had him his whole life) who has recurrent, unpredictable biting of humans and other dogs. He has been doing this since he was a puppy. If I could describe them best I would say they are fear-based "charge and nips", then he turns and runs away (no "mauling", full-jaw bites or pursuit). Usual occurrence is when someone comes to our front door or is near our backyard, but again it's not consistent or predictable. If he was a smaller dog it would probably not be an issue due to low damage potential, but he is a large dog and he has broken skin multiple times (no serious injuries). Throughout his life we have tried hard to socialize him with other dogs and humans. I am a lifelong dog owner and have done rigorous clicker training with him. After one bite years ago we had him see a professional behavior therapist who had him at his place for 3 weeks with plenty of other dogs (no issues). We also escalated to E collar training. He has also been on medications which helped with his anxiety when needed. Honestly, all of this has really mellowed him out, he follows commands and overall is extremely sweet with our family and most every dog and human he meets once the initial "greeting period" is managed. Unfortunately, he keeps having these episodes - usually once per year or so despite everything we are doing to minimize risk. This time no one got seriously hurt, but if it would have been a child they could have been. So basically, we are running out of options. Based on my reading it seems most consistent with idiopathic aggression - again it's been lifelong, infrequent, unprovoked, and usually unpredictable despite our training. He is a part of our family, but has been the most difficult dog I have ever raised and I'm not sure my family is willing to keep rolling the dice on "getting lucky" with who he sporadically nips. He has enough of a human bite history that I doubt I could get a person to rehome him (or even if I did, would it be moral?). After long discussions with my wife, we are left with the heartbreaking option of euthanizing him, versus muzzling him throughout the day when the house is not locked up for the night. This would provide a near continuous physical barrier to him nipping - eliminating the risk prettymuch completely - while allowing him to drink water and accept treats. I am doing very careful muzzle acclimation and accommodation, and am currently using the Barkington Ultra muzzle which is light weight, breathable, and allows him to take treats and drink water. We are hoping it can be like "a pair of glasses" that he puts on in the morning after breakfast and takes off at night. I appreciate any advice, particularly on any muzzles that are comfortable and ok for long term use (I know that's not the intent of really any muzzles, but right now it's one of our last options). Any other thoughts on the situation would be appreciated. Thanks. dogs

[Discussion] Losing my best friend on Sunday. https://ift.tt/eA8V8J Tomorrow my boy, Max, will be 13 years old. He's been with me since I was 8 years old and he was just 6 months. Almost 5 years ago, he was hit by a car and has been paralyzed from the waist down ever since. The vet told my parents that he would never be able to walk again and perhaps should think about putting him to sleep. My siblings and I threw a fit and sobbed. We refused and begged them to save him. We ended up bringing him home from the vet just to see if he'd improve from being in a familiar place with his family and our other pup. He quickly recovered and seemed back to his normal self, just, y'know, unable to walk. We got him a doggie wheelchair and he adapted to his new life. We'd wheelbarrow him around if he wanted to move places and my mom would help him go to the bathroom and change his diapers. Everything had been going well until this past year. He started to whimper out of nowhere and scream in pain randomly. He stopped eating at times and then things seemed to be back to normal a week later. It was a lot of back and forth. We got in touch with a vet working within an animal hospice service and explained the situation. She provided us with medication and said if there was no improvement, we'd have to discuss alternatives like euthanasia. He ended up responding very well to the medication and we concluded that his teeth/mouth was hurting him which is why he'd stop eating and yelp at times. For months he'd been doing well and then again, he started declining, even with the medication. It's come to the point where we've scheduled an appointment for this Sunday, August 18, for him to be put down. I've been spending every moment with him, crying and holding him, giving him cuddles and kisses, and trying to come to terms with losing him forever. I've been reading tons of posts on reddit and those poems about dog deaths and I don't know what to do. I'm not a religious person so having him die is him ceasing to exist. My mom ordered a pet casket and we plan on burying him in our yard and I bawl just thinking of his body being put in there and covered in dirt and him just being gone. I sometimes think, "What if he doesn't want to go? What if he'll improve?" But I look in his eyes and know this isn't the life I want for him or he wants. I guess I'm just here to rant but also wanting to hear from others. dogs
