[Help] – When, if ever, is it OK to leave your dog in the car?Dog Talks
Today was the first time I have ever left my dogs in the car. I was at an estate sale and was loading up two pieces of furniture.
It was overcast, 70°F, I had the windows down, parked in the shade on the curb.
So I park, go in the house to sign in, and when I walk out to grab a dolly there's a guy passing on the sidewalk, walking his own dog, that loudly yells, "HEY WHO LEFT THEIR DOG IN THE CAR?". I tell him its me, and he lectures me about it is illegal to do that, and that it's going to get to 120 degrees inside of my car.
I tell him, "dude, its 70 degrees, I'm gonna load one thing then I'm out of here."
He yells back "it doesn't matter, you can't do that its gonna be 120 degrees in your car its illegal" basically in front of an entire audience.
I'm embarrassed, so I go ahead and take them out and one of the staff at the estate sale was kind enough to watch them. Also the interior of the car was 71°F
I'm about to be done loading up so I put my dogs back in the car, and the same guy comes back rolling in on a skateboard. Argument ensues, he's asking why the dogs are STILL in the car. He makes a scene again and says he loves dogs and I don't blah blah blah.
Anyways, I have been a dog owner for over 15 years, and this was my first time leaving my dogs in the car because It was only going to be 10-15 minutes and it was cloudy and mild. I would NEVER leave my dogs in a hot car, and I was very insulted that the guy insinuated that.
So, is leaving a dog in the car not something that should EVER be done?
EDIT: Thanks for all your responses. This incident kinda reminded me of the episode in the show Portlandia where two hipsters get mad about a dog being tied to a post outside a restaurant, and they "liberate" it, and the owner comes back like "where's my dog"?? lol
