[discussion] is it normal dogs to run up to other dogs to greet them at the dog park? https://ift.tt/eA8V8J I have a 7 month old GSD who I have put a TON of work into because of her leash reactivity and honestly one of the most helpful things for me has been taking her to off-leash parks...it helps her exercise, socialize, has been great to work on recall and other training in high distraction environments. She is actually very gentle, especially for her age as far as reading cues and backing off when dogs don’t want to play. She has never gotten into a fight and when dogs have snapped at her for being annoying she has always backed off. So my question is-is it normal for dogs to run up to greet each other or is my dog being rude? When a new dog enters the park she will sometimes run up to sniff it and sometimes try to play with it (like I said if the dog isn’t interested she has always backed off and i call her back if I can tell the dog isn’t having it from the start). My girl was rough-housing with another dog at the park this morning, both having a great time. Another dog of similar size entered the park. Everyone noticed and after a few minutes my dog ran over to do her usual sniff and greet-I say ran because it’s important...she didn’t walk over. The owner of New Dog body blocked my girl and grabbed onto her to prevent her from interacting with his dog who was sniffing around. I ran over when I saw what he was doing, by the time I got to her she was throwing a fit because some man had grabbed her and wasn’t letting go of her harness...I honestly didn’t have time to have a real conversation because my dog had gotten upset and started barking and I was focused on redirecting her from him at this point. He RAN out of the park with his dog. Is it possible he noticed something in her behavior that I didn’t? Is it rude for my dog to run to greet another dog? We’ve never had a bad interaction before and if a dog in the past doesn’t want to play they just go their separate ways. dogs whiskersandwhiskey
