[Discussion] A harness saved my dog's life.Dog Talks

Went for a hike today with my dog (5 years-old, golden retriever/lab mix) and once we got home, I noticed a black dog run over to us from our yard. I didn’t put two and two together at first and thought it was my friend’s dog, but realized it was the neighbor’s pit bull that had gotten loose into our yard. My dog was leashed and wearing a vested harness.

This pit bull has a long history of aggression, and has killed another small dog when it was on a walk with their owner. Ran straight out of the yard and into the street as they were walking by the house.

My dog immediately tensed up since she just ran up to us, sniffed him, and immediately latched onto his neck. I couldn’t for the life of me pry her off of him, my dog was screaming and trying to attack back and even when I managed to get a hold of the other dog and lift her off the ground, she still wasn’t letting go.

Her hold on my dogs neck loosened up and I managed to get her off of him, the moment I see the owner waltzing over to me. He’s completely unapologetic and just takes her away back to their yard. Just uttered "okay, okay" as I'm screaming at him that she could have killed my dog and what was he thinking letting her roam loose.

My dog’s neck is covered in saliva, but miraculously he’s unhurt and there isn’t a drop of blood. Put two and two together as I remove his collar and harness, and see all of the puncture marks in the vest of the harness and that the buckle on his collar is shattered. She wasn’t able to get a good grip on my dog and I’m convinced his harness saved his life.

This was one of the scariest things I ever had to witness, and I just wanted to share that investing in a harness could save your dog’s life. I'm so glad he was wearing one, and it makes me sick to think of what could have happened. I had never heard of something like this happening, so I just wanted to share.

And if you own a bully breed, please be responsible with them at ALL times. I do not hate any breed of dog, but it’s the owner’s responsibility to be aware of breed traits and being prone to aggression is a scientific fact about pits. Even if your dog is the sweetest thing on the planet, it is still your responsibility to make sure nothing could happen.

Edit: my dog actually does have one puncture wound at the base of his neck, pretty devastated I missed it and at the ER with him.
