[vent] I don’t care what you think about how I got my dogDog Talks

I panic bought my dog in March, right as the pandemic was hitting my part of the country. I had been perusing shelter websites and I talked to my good friend and colleague who volunteers at a shelter. At that stage, all my local shelters had closed. I live in a HUGE county so basically this meant no shelter dogs for the foreseeable future and I had recently hit a major wall in my career progress. Basically I was incredibly depressed.

I found myself poring over Craigslist ads for days on end. So many backyard breeders. Finally I found a posting that seemed genuine. A family 1.5 hours drive away had found themselves with 3 puppies on top of four unfixed small dogs (gee, maybe fixing your dogs is a good idea!) and they could not afford to keep the puppies. They were 3 months old and unvaccinated. The seller listed them as “maltipoo” but the asking price was under $150 and negotiable. So I lowballed and he accepted (his mom was making him rehome the puppies, he was sad but also too young to understand that you can’t have 7 dogs if you can barely afford 4).

So I drove on over to meet one of the female pups. I figured I’d interact with her and if she liked me and I liked her, I’d buy her. Well, she did not like me. At all. She bit me and ran away. So I was about to leave when the mom says “please just meet the boy”. I didn’t want a male dog (I don’t know why I was thinking this way, it makes zero sense) and I was very hesitant. Then he emerged from their modest but well-kept home and bounded right into my arms. It was love at first sight. I handed over $150 because I felt weird about lowballing after seeing their financial situation and we drove off together.

He’s the best thing that ever happened to me. He has brought so much joy to my family. My dad had a series of health emergencies and it was my Papa who encouraged him to walk after his emergency surgery. He made it all the way around the block and pushed himself because he said “if Papa can do it, so can I”. I’ve never seen my mom respond to an animal the way she has with papa. She loves him and he loves her right back. His joy when my sister and her husband come over is amazing.

We just got back from the beach (he loves sand and surf) and you know what? I don’t give a 💩 what anyone has to say about how I got him because I got him and I’m so grateful that he’s part of my life. sorry not sorry
