Watched a dog get hit by a car and die [Help]Dog Talks

I don't have anyone at the moment to talk with in person about this and I'm feeling a bit traumatized. I'm an American living in Mexico City. Stray dogs can pretty much be found everywhere in the country. Many dog owners allow their dogs run freely on the streets. I live along a large avenue where speed limits are not enforced and cars drive at rapid speeds.

I have a dog who I found on the street almost a year ago and though he's been a lot of work, he's absolutely my best friend. I was walking him this morning like we do everyday, on our way back to the apartment, and someone was blowing leaves, I was distracted cause there was lots of dirt in the air, and I stepped off the curb with my dog to avoid them. Got back on the curb as soon as we passed the leaf blower, suddenly I hear a car frantically braking and then a dog screaming. I turned around and saw the moment the dog got hit and it went rolling against the asphalt. It screamed in pain, tried to get up but couldn't. Then it laid back down, went quiet, and it was clearly in a lot of pain.

Me and three bystanders looked on shocked, almost like we couldn't believe what had just happened. I didn't know if it's owner was around, but we all rushed to the dog, what looked like to be some kind of german shepherd mix, and carried it off the street and onto the sidewalk. I had the sinking feeling that this was really bad. It was still alive but it was in bad shape. Mouth was bloody, some blood on its body, it almost had no life left. It had a collar on but no name tag.

I decided to try to save it. I asked one of the other bystanders if she would go with me to the hospital with this dog and she immediately agreed. We both had our dogs on us, so we ran home, I dropped off my dog, and got in my car.

I arrived on the scene, which was just outside my apartment. I looked at a bystander and he just shook his head at me. The dog had already gone. He told me that it couldn't breathe and passed away. When the lady arrived after me to find the dog had passed away too, she was stricken by grief as well.

I've never seen anything like this in front of my very own eyes. I've owned several dogs and cats in my life, and have had to put them down and watch their lives go. But seeing a dog go in this manner was horrific. I'm traumatized and extremely sad, and hope I can move passed this soon. Everything I saw has been replaying in my mind over and over, and hoping that writing this down helps me find some relief. The car that hit the dog was actually a work van and he just drove off without stopping. More likely than not, the dog's body is still on the sidewalk. The lady posted onto the neighborhood facebook group a picture of the dog, and we're hoping that it's owner will come out and retrieve the body. Unfortunately, I've already seen several cases of dog and cat bodies being left on the streets, sometimes for weeks. People really don't give a flying fuck here. If it's not retrieved soon, I'll have to do it myself.

I know it's not that rational, but I'm questioning myself whether I could've done more. I ask myself where did this dog come from, I didn't see him anywhere as we were walking back home. Was I too distracted by the leaf blower and didn't see him on the other side of the street about to cross to our side. If maybe I hadn't been distracted, could I have seen the dog and waved off the oncoming traffic. I feel helpless, questioning why I couldn't have done something more.
