[Help] Tips for safely walking a strong flight risk dogDog Talks
Hello r/dogs! Looking for advice for walking our newest addition to the family.
We recently adopted a very scared but very sweet adult bloodhound, Ladybird. LB comes from an abusive puppy mill situation and is still learning to trust humans. We actually already had a terrifying ordeal with LB - she escaped from my husband the second night we had her, and the rescue helped us search for her for two days before we finally caught her by luring her onto someone's porch with a dog friend of hers that a former foster brought for the search. We have since built a very tall fence to contain her.
LB is doing very well and is already bonding to me, I can pretty much rub all over her without issue. She's getting there with my husband but is still afraid of his touch. I'm concerned because she is a young dog and needs lots of exercise, but our yard is small and I am afraid to take her on a walk after her Great Escape. She is also very strong, and even though I'm pretty stout myself, I am afraid she can get away from me if she goes into flight mode.
I feel she is getting comfortable enough with me now that I should be thinking about walking her outside of our yard, but a loud noise could put her in flight mode. I have a slip lead and a martingale collar, and I think bringing our well adjusted basset hound along will keep her calm, but I'd like to get a secure harness and some way to clip her to my actual body in some way, just in case.
Any tips on a good harness, security clip, or any other security measures for a strong flight risk dog?
The other thing is - she was emaciated when she was rescued and she's still gaining weight, she has a good 12 lbs more she needs to gain. So I need a harness that can hopefully adjusts as she gets larger.
TL:DR Looking for harness or other security gear recommendations for a very strong, skittish bloodhound
