[Discussion] Scared of neighbors' aggressive Rottweiler, need adviceDog Talks
I moved into a nice little complex that I really like in September with my fiance and my dog, an 11-year-old corgi/shiba-inu mix. My neighbor has a 9-month-old male Rottweiler. I was surprised by this immediately, as I specifically picked this apartment because it is a restricted breed complex. I truly don't have a problem with any breed, but in my experience apartments that DO allow restricted breeds are absolutely full of dogs, which I wanted to avoid.
The dog barks occasionally, no big deal, so does mine. The problem is that it is extremely fence-reactive and only getting worse. The apartments have a little patio attached with a wooden fence and gate - our neighbor like to leave their dog unattended on their patio (which is so small for a large dog, I feel bad for him). At first he would just growl when we walked past, then growling and barking at us as soon as he heard our front door open, and now he jumps against their wooden gate with his paws on the gate, head sticking over the fence, barking and growling as soon as our door opens. It’s ridiculous, and it’s scary. I’m a very small 5’0” woman, and even at only 9 months, their Rottweiler is very large. This problem has only gotten steadily worse, and as he isn't fully grown I'm worried about it just getting worse and worse.
The neighbors don’t seem to care. Sometimes she’ll come out when she hears him and say no and take him inside, but never an apology. Sometimes they do nothing, it could go either way. Or they’ll say “Yeah he’s an asshole,” very dismissively.
This morning when I left for work he was barking and growling, pounding against their gate, head over the gate and it terrified me. When he’s done this before his body has hit the handle mechanism of the gate and with how large and heavy he is, I have no doubt he could accidentally knock that gate open, which he has managed once before - the gate didn't open, but the handle mechanism on the gate opened a bit.
Rottweilers are banned at our complex, so I worry that complaining will get them kicked out or they’ll be told to get rid of the dog if they want to stay. On the other hand, I’m scared of this dog, and I don’t want him hurting me or my own dog. I’ve heard him have an altercation with a small dog in the parking lot before, so I wonder if anyone has complained, or maybe they didn’t know where the owner lived and couldn’t.
The other problem is that I don’t want personal confrontation with these neighbors. Ideally this could just be resolved through a conversation, but I don’t want any confrontation with them directly. My fiance and I hear them fighting about rent frequently, up until one kicked the other out, but she broke back in through a window while he was gone, so he boarded up his window....and now they’re back together again. They just don’t strike me as stable people, and I don’t want to be the direct, obvious cause of them losing their dog or housing.
Has anyone experienced something similar? I record video whenever I leave and am writing down the dates/times/factual descriptions if I ever need it. Maybe I just need encouragement to just speak to the property manager. I really don’t know what to do, it feels like a Catch-22. Any help is appreciated!
