[Fluff] My dang dog loves hot sauce.Dog Talks

I know. Don't tell me, I know. No hot sauce for him. It's bad and we don't. He's a Sato from Puerto Rico and he was wicked skinny when we got him. We cleaned him up, got rid of the worms, figured out he needs a ton of fiber to not end up with anal gland issues, figured out high fat makes him nauseous. And these past few weeks we've had a couple spicy meals and oh my goodness is he up in our face, nose wiggling, best "pitty the poor puppy" desperate expression on his face. He wants hot spice so bad. He never really begs at mealtimes - he's terribly respectful of our meals. Unless there's hot sauce. All I can figure is, when he was half starved his best meals were human leftovers and he got a taste for it. It was bad for him, but less bad than starving. What kills me is my prissy princess of a hound (also rescue but she's a Lady and she'll make your eardrums bleed if you forget that fact) - she'll scarf down any kibble and look for m

[Fluff] (update) walking a high prey drive dog off the leadDog Talks

So maybe a month ago I asked for advice about training my doggo off lead and trying to teach my turd of an S/O that dogs don't get to prove themselves.... They have to be trained. I understand that it might not work for everyone, but we agreed on a few changes. I introduced a whistle for recall, one doot for hold up wait, two doots to come here. I asked a local farmer if I could use a specific field to train my doggo (it's enclosed and at least a mile from anything), they aren't using the land at the moment so he can't destroy anything. I bought a 30m horse lead, this was to practice recall while still being able to grab him if he wasn't listening We changed the old bottle of rocks technique (to distract doggos when they are being naughty), to a children's cap gun. As we found it doesn't work too well on grass. It doesn't frighten our dog, but it's loud enough to get him to snap out of whatever he's doing.. Like chasing birds. Combining a

[Discussion] You can afford the treatment but can you afford the diagnostics to get there?Dog Talks

So I am dealing with some unknown medical issues for Gin, she's my senior American Foxhound. For starters had some weird mobility issues pop up, she's on medication for it, rehab, and she had full spinal x-rays but they found nothing of clinical significance. Spinal x-rays somewhere around $700. Now we noticed several months ago that we were having demand barking at 2am, increased drinking, increased urination, and most recently bladder control issues. UTI negative, blood relatively normal, urine extremely diluted. From 2019 to now my vet has identified a slow but worsening trend of her kidney values/urine dilution. She has had SEVERAL blood panels, urine samples, and now cultures to try and pinpoint what is happening. Now she just had an ultrasound yesterday and a test done for Cushing's disease, which results should arrive today. Ultrasound was clean and the kidney looks fine physically. In just the last 7 days I have spent $1,883.74 in diagnostics. This doesn't

[RIP] Goodbye Toby, mixed GSD, 14Dog Talks

Early this AM we had to let our sweet german shepherd mix girl Toby have her final rest. She was diagnosed with Lymphoma last year and we treated her with CHOP. She responded very well and had a full life while on chemo. On her first relapse, her oncologist found she also had TCC. We decided to treat as we go as long as Toby’s quality of life would remain high. She was in excellent health for her age, minus the cancer so her activity level was still high and her oncologist was surprised about how much she walked daily still. But this weekend on Saturday we got one last lap around the park and a final stroll around the neighborhood. Then early Sunday things turned quickly. It was a shock and we are still processing this all. But a part of me is glad it happened this way rather than a slow progression of the lymphoma taking over. I like to think she got to do her last few things she loved and chose her time to rest. She was so tough through all of this. Lots of trips to the clinic and
